Description
Honey has been used in beauty rituals since antiquity, prized for its ability to hold moisture. IO Conditioning Honey Derivative takes this natural humectant and modifies it to give it a positive charge, so it clings to hair and skin instead of rinsing away. The result is a conditioning humectant with an appealing honey story.
What the name means
Quat is short for quaternary ammonium, a chemical group that carries a permanent positive charge. Hair and skin carry a slight negative charge, especially when damaged, so quaternized ingredients are attracted to them. In the market, this ingredient is associated with Hydroxypropyltrimonium Honey. Confirm the exact INCI on the supplier CoA for each lot.
Product data
Liquid, water-soluble, pH 4.0 to 6.5. The card does not list specific applications. Ingredients of this type are used in hair care and skin care for moisture and conditioning.
Hair care products
Shampoo
A moisturizing shampoo that leaves hair softer and easier to comb.

Formulating guidance
Add the ingredient to the water phase and keep the finished pH within 4.0 to 6.5. Its cationic character means it should be tested in anionic surfactant systems for clarity and viscosity. Combine with honey extract for a full honey story, IO Hair Moisture Active Liquid for hair moisture and Polyquaternium-10 for extra conditioning. More conditioning actives are listed under actives.
Claims
Use cosmetic wording: softer, moisturized, easier-to-comb hair; soft, comfortable skin. A honey story appeals to customers but should not suggest the product is raw honey.
Vegan audiences
Honey derivatives are not vegan. Label accordingly and offer an alternative for vegan customers.
Testing
Run stability at room temperature and 40 °C. Check color, which can darken with honey derivatives, and viscosity in surfactant systems.
Range planning
A honey hair line with shampoo, conditioner and leave-in, plus a body wash and lotion, creates a warm, recognizable family.
Batch quality
Record the lot number from the CoA, check color on arrival and keep retained samples.
Fragrance and color
Honey-themed products benefit from warm, sweet fragrance notes and a golden tint. Natural color from the ingredient may vary; a fixed colorant can keep batches consistent.
Why humectants need conditioning
Plain humectants such as glycerin draw water but rinse off easily. A cationic humectant stays on the hair after rinsing and keeps working, which is why ingredients of this type are popular in rinse-off products. In leave-ins, they add moisture without the weight of oils.
Curly and textured hair
Curly and coily hair is naturally drier because oils travel less easily along the strand. Conditioning humectants are especially welcome in curl routines, from co-wash to leave-in.
Original recipe: honey moisture shampoo, 100 g
