Description
This ingredient at a glance
IO Hair Conditioning Agent Granules comes as waxy granules that dissolve in the oil phase. The card gives a pH range on the acidic side and lists hair care products, hair masks, rinses and products for hair restoration. This ingredient is a well-known family of cationic conditioning agents used in hair care. Check the INCI name and recommended level on the supplier data sheet and CoA, since the family includes several grades.
How cationic conditioners work
After shampooing, the hair surface carries a slight negative charge. Cationic ingredients carry a positive charge, so they are drawn to the hair and stay there after rinsing. The thin layer they leave reduces friction between strands. Hair detangles more easily, combs without snagging and feels softer and smoother. It also reduces static, which is especially welcome in dry weather.
Product formats
Rinse-off conditioners
The classic home for a cationic conditioner. Apply after shampoo, leave for a short time and rinse.
Hair masks
Rich masks use a higher share of conditioners and fatty alcohols for an intensive softening effect.
Rinses
Light acidic rinses smooth the hair surface and make combing easier.
Restoring hair care
The card lists products for hair restoration. appearance support masks for dry, colored or heat-styled hair often feature cationic conditioners together with proteins and oils.
Processing
Melt the granules into the heated oil phase together with fatty alcohols such as cetearyl alcohol. Add this phase to the hot water phase and mix until a smooth, creamy emulsion forms. Cool while stirring and add proteins, extracts and fragrance at the end. Adjust the final pH into the acidic range given on the card.
Good partners
Proteins add strength and body: silk protein gives smoothness and shine, while a keratin hair mask shows how conditioners and proteins work together. Explore more hair ingredients in the actives catalog.
Testing
Run wet and dry combing tests on hair tresses, and ask a panel to rate softness, shine and detangling. Check viscosity and stability after storage in a warm cabinet.
Claims
Hair detangles easily; hair feels soft, smooth and manageable; reduces frizz and static.

Balancing conditioning and weight
Too much conditioner can weigh fine hair down, while too little leaves thick hair tangled. Many brands make two versions: a light one for fine hair and a richer one for curly or dry hair. Adjust the conditioner and fatty alcohol together to keep the texture stable.
Rinse-off versus leave-in
Rinse-off conditioners can carry more conditioning agent, because most of the product is washed away and only a thin layer stays on the hair. Leave-in products need a lighter touch, so check the supplier guidance before you use a rinse-off grade in a spray or cream that stays on. Many brands keep a separate, lighter conditioner for leave-in formats and reserve the waxy granules for masks and rinse-off products.
Range ideas
A shampoo, a rinse-off conditioner and an intensive mask make a classic trio around one conditioning system.
