Adenosine at a glance

Adenosine is a white crystalline powder with the INCI adenosine and CAS 58-61-7. It is a nucleoside made of adenine and ribose, a building block present in every living cell. In cosmetics it has a strong reputation, especially in Korean skincare, for smoother-looking skin and a softer look of wrinkles. A low-dose powder

Because adenosine works at a fraction of a percent, accurate weighing matters more than with most actives. A 100 g batch at 0.05% needs only 0.05 g. Many formulators make a 1% premix in warm water and add the right amount of the premix to each batch, which makes dosing simple and reliable.

Dissolving adenosine

Adenosine dissolves only slightly in cold water and much better in warm water. Warm a portion of the water phase to about 50 to 60 °C, stir in the powder until clear, let it cool and add it to the batch below 40 °C. Keep the final pH in a skin-friendly range around 5 to 7.

Testing

Original recipe: smoothing face serum, 100 g

Distilled water 89.15 g, glycerin 4.00 g, adenosine 0.05 g, niacinamide 3.00 g, panthenol 1.00 g, sodium hyaluronate 0.30 g, phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin 1.00 g, allantoin 0.20 g, sodium citrate 0.80 g, citric acid 0.50 g. Dissolve adenosine in a tenth of the water warmed to 55 °C, pre-wet the hyaluronate in glycerin and add it to the remaining water, dissolve niacinamide, panthenol and allantoin, add the cooled adenosine solution and the preservative, then adjust the pH to about 6.

Regulatory note

In some markets, adenosine is recognized for functional wrinkle-care claims at a defined level, commonly 0.04%. Check the local rules and the supplier's documents before making such claims.
