Description
Skin that reacts quickly to temperature, wind, shaving or new products is often described as sensitive or reactive. Customers with such skin want products that feel calm and comfortable from the first application. IO Soothing Botanical Active Liquid is a liquid botanical active positioned for this need, with a name that combines a plant reference and the idea of calm.
About the name
The second part, calmine, describes its soothing positioning. The exact INCI, botanical source and active content are confirmed on the supplier CoA for each lot, so use that document rather than general descriptions for your label.
Specifications from the card
Water-soluble liquid, pH below 6.0. Added to the water phase.
Product ideas
Soothing serum
A light, fragrance-free serum used after cleansing, combining the active with humectants and panthenol.
Comfort cream
A gentle emulsion with barrier lipids for skin that feels tight and reactive.
After-shave balm
A fluid balm for skin that looks red and feels irritated after shaving.
Mask
A cream mask for occasional use when skin needs extra comfort, for example after sun or wind exposure.
Formulating guidance
Add this ingredient during cool-down into the water phase. Because the material has a pH below 6.0, check the pH of the finished product after addition and adjust if needed. Sensitive skin products benefit from short formulas: a mild emulsifier, a few well-tolerated emollients, humectants and one or two comfort actives. Good partners include ectoin and IO Soothing Plant Active Liquid. Find more comfort ingredients in actives.
Claims
Keep claims cosmetic and measurable: soothed-feeling, more comfortable, less red-looking skin. Use consumer perception studies on people who self-identify as having sensitive skin, and if possible instrumental measurements of redness on the finished product.
Preservation and packaging
Sensitive skin products should avoid known irritants, but they still need a robust preservative system that passes a challenge test. Airless packaging reduces contamination risk and helps keep preservative levels moderate.
Who buys comfort products
People with sensitive skin are a large and loyal audience. Many have tried numerous products and are cautious. Clear labels, short ingredient lists and honest claims build trust. Offering a sample size helps them test tolerance.
Testing tips
Run stability at room temperature and 40 °C for several weeks, checking pH, odor and color. A patch test under supervision and an use test on sensitive panelists are good additions before launch.
Seasonal angle
Reactive-looking skin often worsens in winter, with cold wind outside and dry, heated air indoors. A seasonal message about comfort in the cold months gives the product a timely reason to be recommended.
Texture matters for reactive skin
Heavy, occlusive creams can feel warm and uncomfortable on reactive skin, while very light gels may not give enough comfort. A medium emulsion with a soft, non-greasy finish is often the best compromise. Test spreadability on the face and the neck, and ask panelists how the skin feels after an hour, not just immediately after application.
