Sodium PCA is the sodium salt of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid. Skin produces PCA naturally as part of its natural moisturizing factor, the mix of small water-binding molecules found in the outer layers of the skin. In cosmetics the sodium salt is used as a humectant: it attracts water and helps skin and hair feel supple. This grade is supplied as a 50 percent solution, a clear, syrupy liquid that is easy to pour and weigh.

Light lotions, gel creams and appearance-focused cosmetic creams use Sodium PCA next to glycerin to build a layered moisture feel. Because it is less sticky than many humectants at moderate levels, it suits fluid textures that should absorb fast.

Toners and essences

A clear toner is a simple showcase. Sodium PCA dissolves instantly, keeps the liquid crystal clear and adds a cushioned after-feel without oiliness.

Handling and addition

The solution can be added at almost any stage of the water phase, hot or cold, since it is already dissolved. Weigh it like any liquid humectant and stir until uniform. Its near-neutral pH means it rarely shifts the pH of the batch much, but measure the finished product anyway, especially in acid-adjusted formulas.

Compatibility notes

Sodium PCA mixes with glycerin, propanediol, betaine, panthenol, urea, amino acids and hyaluronic acid, and many humectant blends combine several of these. Being a salt, it adds a little electrolyte load, so watch the viscosity of electrolyte-sensitive gels such as carbomer bases. Distilled water 88.30 g, Sodium PCA 50% 4.00 g, glycerin 2.00 g, panthenol 1.50 g, hydrolyzed wheat protein 1.00 g, polyquaternium-10 0.20 g, PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil 1.00 g, fragrance 0.30 g, preservative 1.00 g, lactic acid to target pH 0.70 g. Premix fragrance with the solubilizer, dissolve the rest in water and combine.

Choosing the level

Humectants change the after-feel quickly: too little and the product feels plain, too much and it can feel tacky in humid weather. Run a short side-by-side test of two levels in the same base and pick the one testers prefer.

Storage

Keep the container tightly closed in a cool, dry place. Humectants attract moisture from the air, so close the lid right after weighing.
