Description

This ingredient at a glance

IO Silicone Nano Dispersion is described on the card as a silicone nano dispersion that is compatible with both water and oils. The listed products are serums, creams and balms. Fine silicone dispersions are used to bring silicone sensory benefits into formulas that would otherwise struggle to carry them, such as clear water-based serums. Check the INCI name, the silicone type and the recommended level on the supplier data sheet and CoA, since these decide how the product feels and how it should be labeled.

Why silicones still matter in skin care

Silicones give an unique skin feel: smooth, dry, non-greasy and long-lasting. They spread easily, help other ingredients glide and leave a breathable film that reduces the feeling of roughness. Many premium serums and primers rely on them for their signature texture. A nano dispersion makes it easier to bring that feel into lighter formats.

Product formats

Serums

Water-based serums gain a silky slip and a soft, velvety finish without an oily layer.

Creams

In day and night creams, the dispersion reduces drag during application and gives a smooth after-feel.

Balms

Balms for lips, hands or dry areas can use it to soften a heavy, waxy texture.

Processing

Add the dispersion to the water phase of serums at room temperature, or to the oil phase of creams and balms, following the data sheet. Avoid very high shear for long periods unless the supplier allows it, as some dispersions can be sensitive to harsh mixing. Check the appearance and viscosity of the finished product after one day.

Good partners

Humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid complete a serum base. Boron Glow boron nitride adds a soft-focus glow, and IO Texturizing Starch Powder tunes the finish toward matte. More sensory helpers are listed in the actives catalog.

Testing

Compare sensory profiles with and without the dispersion in a small panel. Check stability at high and low temperatures and after freeze and thaw cycles.

Claims

Silky, smooth feel; skin feels soft and conditioned; lightweight, non-greasy finish.

Characteristics

Appearance: silicone nano dispersion. Solubility: in water and oils. Listed products: serums, creams, balms. INCI, silicone type and level: supplier data sheet and CoA.

Original recipe: silky hydrating serum, 100 g

Distilled water 87.20 g, glycerin 4.00 g, butylene glycol 3.00 g, IO Silicone Nano Dispersion 2.00 g, sodium hyaluronate 0.30 g, hydroxyethylcellulose 0.80 g, panthenol 1.00 g, allantoin 0.20 g, phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin 1.00 g, citric acid 0.50 g. Disperse the cellulose in water, add the humectants and actives, stir in IO Silicone Nano Dispersion, preserve and adjust the pH.

Labeling silicones

Some shoppers look for silicone-free products, while others value the silky feel silicones provide. Be clear about the silicone content in the ingredient list, and decide early whether the range will carry a silicone-free claim. If it does, choose a plant-based alternative for that line and keep this dispersion for products where the texture is the main benefit.

Balm textures

Classic balms built only on waxes and butters can feel heavy and drag on the skin. A small amount of silicone dispersion improves glide and gives a more modern finish, while keeping the comforting richness of the balm. Test different levels to find the balance between cushion and slip.

Range ideas

A silky serum, a smoothing primer-cream and a lip balm can share the same sensory technology.
