Description
Silicones give products their silky slip and smooth finish, but many brands now want silicone-free labels. Silicone veegetal is a water-soluble ingredient whose name says what it aims for: a plant-based route to silicone-like feel in hair and skin care.
Product data
Water-soluble, insoluble in oil. For Silicone veegetal, the supplier CoA of each lot confirms the exact INCI, composition and recommended level.
Silicone alternatives
Silicones such as dimethicone are oil-like and form slippery films. Alternatives use plant-derived esters, sugar derivatives or polymers to copy part of that feel. A water-soluble alternative behaves differently from an oil-like silicone: it sits in the water phase and rinses more easily, which is helpful in hair care.
Product formats
Silicone-free conditioner
A rinse-off product with good slip.
Leave-in spray
A light detangling spray.
Silky serum
A water-based serum with a smooth finish.
Light cream
A cream with a silky after-feel.
Formulating guidance
Add it to the water phase and compare slip against a dimethicone benchmark. Pair it with Polyquaternium-16 for detangling, D-Panthenol for moisture and hydrolyzed keratin for a care story. More ingredients are listed under actives.
Benchmarking
Prepare the same conditioner with dimethicone and with the alternative. Compare wet combing, dry feel and shine in a blind panel. This shows where the alternative matches and where to boost with other ingredients.
Claims
Use factual wording such as silicone-free and silky, smooth feel. Support with panel tests.
Who the products are for
Natural and clean brands and customers who prefer silicone-free products, especially for curly hair routines.
Curly hair
Many curly-hair routines avoid silicones. A water-soluble slip agent fits co-wash and leave-in products for this group.
Testing
Run stability at room temperature and 40 °C, checking viscosity, clarity and appearance.
Packaging
Bottles for conditioners, sprays for leave-ins, droppers for serums.
Batch quality
Keep the CoA for each lot and store retained samples.
Range planning
A conditioner, a leave-in and a serum form a silicone-free line.
Labeling
Use the INCI from the CoA. A silicone-free claim requires that no silicones are present in the formula.
Preservation
Confirm the preservative system with a challenge test.
Sensory design
Test slip on wet and dry hair and the after-feel on skin at five minutes.
Original recipe: silicone-free detangling spray, 100 g
Purified water 89.70 g, Silicone veegetal 3.00 g as an example level per CoA, Polyquaternium-16 1.50 g, glycerin 2.00 g, propanediol 1.50 g, panthenol 0.50 g, PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil 0.30 g, fragrance 0.20 g, preservative 0.80 g, lactic acid solution 0.50 g. Premix fragrance with the solubilizer, add to water with the remaining ingredients and stir. Adjust pH to about 4.5.
Skin care detail
In serums and creams, the alternative adds glide during application and a smooth, powdery-soft finish. Because it is water-soluble, it does not give the same water-resistant film as dimethicone, so long-wear products may still need other film-formers. Test feel at application and after five minutes.
Rinse-off advantage
Water-soluble slip agents do not build up on hair the way some silicones can, which suits frequent washers.
Batch notes
Compare slip of each batch with a retained reference sample in a quick wet-combing check.
Gifting
A silicone-free hair duo suits natural gift sets.
Record the lot number in your batch log so every production run can be traced back to its certificate of analysis. Retain a small sample of each lot for at least the shelf life of the finished product, since it makes later quality questions much easier to answer.
Storage
Keep the container closed in a cool place.
