Description
Boron Glow at a glance
Boron Glow is boron nitride, a soft, silky white powder. It does not dissolve in water but disperses in oils, gels and emulsions. The supplier specification gives a working pH range from mildly acidic to mildly alkaline and lists after-sun care cosmetics, emulsion stabilizing, color enhancing and a brightening visual effect, for home and professional cosmetics. Confirm the grade and particle data on the supplier CoA.
Why makeup artists love it
Boron nitride has a plate-like structure that feels exceptionally smooth on skin. It improves the slip of powders and creams, helps pigments spread evenly and scatters light softly. The result is a soft-focus glow that blurs the look of fine lines and pores without a heavy shimmer.
Product formats
Pressed and loose powders
In powders, boron nitride improves slip and adhesion and gives a silky finish.
Primers
Silicone and gel primers with boron nitride create a smooth, blurred canvas for makeup.
Foundations and tinted creams
It helps pigments spread evenly and enhances color.
Glow creams
Day creams with a small amount give an instant radiant, soft-focus look.
After-sun care
The supplier specification lists after-sun care.
Processing
Disperse the powder in the oil phase or in silicone with good mixing. For gels, pre-wet it in a small amount of glycerin or oil. Avoid lumps by adding it slowly.
Partners
Mica, silica and iron oxides suit makeup. Calcium stearate helps powders press and adhere. Calamine powder adds a mineral tint. Browse more in the actives catalog.
Testing
Check the dispersion under a microscope or on a drawdown card. A panel can rate slip, glow and wear time.
Claims
Use visual wording: a soft-focus, radiant look; smoother-looking skin; silky feel.
Range ideas
A blurring primer, a pressed setting powder and a glow cream make a soft-focus collection.
Characteristics
Form: powder. Solubility: insoluble in water; disperses in oil, gels and emulsions. pH range: mildly acidic to mildly alkaline. Listed uses: after-sun care cosmetics, emulsion stabilizing, color enhancing, brightening visual effect, home and professional cosmetics. Grade: supplier CoA.
Original recipe: blurring silicone primer, 100 g
Dimethicone 40.00 g, isododecane 30.00 g, dimethicone crosspolymer 18.00 g, boron nitride 6.00 g, silica 4.00 g, tocopherol 0.50 g, caprylyl glycol 1.50 g. Disperse the powders in the silicones and isododecane, add the crosspolymer and mix until smooth.
Particle size and feel
Boron nitride grades differ in particle size and shape. Larger, flatter particles give more glow, while finer grades feel smoother and more matte. Check the CoA and data sheet, and test a few grades if available. In powders, a moderate share gives a silky feel without making the product too slippery to press. In creams, a small amount is enough for a soft-focus effect. Record the grade and level in the formula file so the effect can be repeated.
Wear testing
Ask panelists to wear the primer or powder for a full day and rate how the skin looks at midday and in the evening. Shine control and blurring often change over the day, and the results help fine-tune the formula.
Range ideas for glow
A glow drop that is mixed into moisturizer or foundation is a popular format. A few drops of a light serum with boron nitride and a fine pearl pigment give a radiant finish on any skin tone.
Lot records
Keep each CoA with the batch file and note the grade used.
Record the lot number in your batch log so every production run can be traced back to its certificate of analysis. Retain a small sample of each lot for at least the shelf life of the finished product, since it makes later quality questions much easier to answer.
Storage
Store closed in a dry place. Close the container after use.
