Description

A water-soluble liquid with a short product card is a practical ingredient to screen: it goes into almost any water-based base, and the supplier documents tell the rest of the story. IO Scalp and Hair Active Liquid is such an active, and its development starts with the CoA.

Product data

Liquid, soluble in water. The card does not list applications, pH or origin. For this ingredient, the supplier CoA and technical sheet of each lot confirms the exact INCI, composition, function and recommended level.

Starting from documents

Collect the CoA, the safety data sheet and the technical sheet before planning a product. Note the INCI, the material pH, appearance, storage advice and any listed incompatibilities. These facts decide which formats are realistic and which claims you can make.

Product formats

Hair tonic

A leave-on scalp spray, if the supplier confirms a hair care function.

Shampoo and conditioner

Rinse-off care where the active is added to the water phase.

Serum

A light skin serum with simple humectants.

Cream

A daily cream with the active in the water phase.

Formulating guidance

Add the active during cool-down into the water phase and record the pH after addition. For a hair concept, pair it with D-Panthenol and hydrolyzed keratin. For skin, combine it with niacinamide and glycerin. More water-phase ingredients are listed under actives.

Test plan

Prepare three small batches at different levels within the supplier recommendation. Store them at room temperature and 40 °C for four weeks and compare pH, viscosity, clarity and odor weekly. Add a small sensory panel at the end.

Claims

Base claims on supplier data and tests of the finished product. Without them, keep wording to feel and appearance.

Who the products are for

Customers who prefer simple water-based products, such as light tonics and serums that do not weigh hair or skin down.

Compatibility

Check compatibility with cationic conditioning agents in hair products and with acids or vitamin C in skin products. Haze or precipitation after a few days at 40 °C is a warning sign.

Testing

Run full stability once screening passes, including a freeze-thaw cycle for products shipped in winter.

Packaging

Spray bottles for tonics, pump bottles for shampoos, droppers for serums.

Labeling

Use the INCI from the CoA on the label rather than the trade name.

Batch quality

Record each lot number, compare appearance on arrival and keep retained samples.

Supplier questions

Ask the supplier for the intended function, recommended level, compatible preservatives and known incompatibilities, and file the answers with the product record.

Original recipe: refreshing scalp tonic, 100 g

Purified water 86.60 g, ethanol 5.00 g, propanediol 3.00 g, IO Scalp and Hair Active Liquid 2.00 g as an example level per CoA, panthenol 1.00 g, glycerin 1.00 g, menthyl lactate 0.20 g, PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil 0.40 g, preservative 0.80 g. Dissolve menthyl lactate in ethanol with the solubilizer, add to water with the glycols, then the active, panthenol and preservative. Adjust pH to about 5.5 if needed.

Sensory checks

Even when the active is a minor part of the formula, it can change feel, odor or color. Compare finished samples with and without it in a blind test with five to ten people. If panelists cannot tell the difference in feel, the active is well integrated; if they can, adjust texture modifiers before scale-up.

Range planning

Start with a single tonic or serum, collect customer feedback and only then extend into shampoos and creams.

Record the lot number in your batch log so every production run can be traced back to its certificate of analysis. Retain a small sample of each lot for at least the shelf life of the finished product, since it makes later quality questions much easier to answer.

Storage

Store the container closed, cool and away from light.
