Rosehip Seed Oil

Rosehip seed oil comes from the small red fruits that wild roses leave behind after flowering. Pressed from the seeds, it has a golden to amber color, a light, fast-absorbing feel and a loyal following in face care, especially among people with dry, mature or uneven-looking skin.

Composition

Rosehip seed oil is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, mainly linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid. These give it a light, dry-touch feel compared with heavier oils. The same fatty acids make it more prone to oxidation, so freshness and protection matter.

Formulating guidance

Oxidation control

Buy fresh oil, store it cold and dark, add tocopherol on arrival if the supplier has not, limit headspace and use amber glass. Smell each lot: a rancid or paint-like note means it is past its best.

Color

The amber color can tint creams slightly. In white creams, keep the level moderate.

Salon use

Rosehip oil is a classic in facial massage. Blends with lighter oils give longer slip for treatments.

Testing

Run stability at room temperature, 40 °C and under light, checking color and odor.

Original recipe: rosehip night face oil, 50 g

Rosehip seed oil 20.00 g, squalane 15.00 g, caprylic/capric triglyceride 10.00 g, jojoba oil 4.00 g, bakuchiol 0.50 g, mixed tocopherols 0.50 g. Mix all ingredients at room temperature and fill into amber glass droppers.

Using it pure

Many customers use rosehip seed oil pure: two or three drops pressed onto clean, slightly damp skin at night. A pure oil product needs only a clear origin, freshness and good packaging. Recommend patch testing and use at night, since a fresh oil layer can feel shiny under makeup.

Blending with other oils

Blending rosehip with more stable oils such as squalane, jojoba or caprylic/capric triglyceride improves shelf life and slip while keeping its character.

Massage oils

For body massage, use rosehip as a small share in a blend with sunflower or almond oil, which keeps cost and oxidation risk down.

Labeling

Use the INCI from the CoA and keep the country of origin as listed in the supplier specification.

Routine

Apply two to three drops each evening after cleansing.

Record the lot number in your batch log so every production run can be traced back to its certificate of analysis. Retain a small sample of each lot for at least the shelf life of the finished product, since it makes later quality questions much easier to answer.

Storage

Keep the oil tightly closed in a cool, dark place, ideally refrigerated after opening.
