Description
Onion has a surprising place in hair care. Onion-based tonics and shampoos are popular in many markets, and red onion extracts bring that tradition into modern formulas. This water-soluble botanical extract suits hair tonics, scalp care and shampoos, as well as serums and creams.
Product data
Water-soluble botanical extract, insoluble in fats and oils. The exact INCI, plant part, solvent and recommended level are confirmed on the supplier CoA for each lot.
Onion in cosmetics
Onion is a source of sulfur compounds and flavonoids such as quercetin, which is especially present in red varieties. In cosmetics, onion extracts are most familiar in scalp and hair care. Keep claims cosmetic and based on tests of the finished product.
Product formats
Scalp tonic
A leave-on spray after washing.
Onion shampoo
A cleanser for fuller-looking hair.
Hair mask
A weekly rinse-off mask.
Face serum
A water-based serum with a botanical story.
Formulating guidance
Add the extract during cool-down into the water phase. Pair it with caffeine and D-Panthenol in scalp tonics, and with biotinoyl tripeptide-1 for a hair-focused peptide story. More botanical extracts are listed under botanical extracts.
Claims
Use cosmetic wording such as fuller-looking, stronger-feeling hair and a refreshed scalp. Support numbers with tests on the finished product.
Who the products are for
Customers interested in traditional hair care ingredients, people with fine or thin-looking hair and natural brands.
Odor management
Onion extracts can carry a characteristic smell. Test fragrance levels carefully; herbal and citrus notes mask well. Compare odor against a reference sample for each lot.
Color
Red onion extracts can add a reddish-brown tint. Check the finished product and choose opaque packaging if needed.
Testing
Run stability at room temperature, 40 °C and under light, checking pH, color and odor.
Packaging
Spray bottles for tonics, opaque bottles for shampoos.
Batch quality
Keep the CoA for each lot, compare color and odor on arrival and store retained samples.
Range planning
A shampoo, a tonic and a mask form an onion hair care line.
Original recipe: onion scalp tonic, 100 g
Purified water 83.10 g, red onion extract 4.00 g as an example level per CoA, ethanol 5.00 g, propanediol 3.00 g, panthenol 1.50 g, caffeine 1.00 g, menthyl lactate 0.20 g, PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil 0.60 g, fragrance 0.30 g, preservative 0.80 g, citric acid solution 0.50 g. Dissolve caffeine in warm water and cool. Dissolve menthyl lactate and fragrance in ethanol with the solubilizer, add to the water with the remaining ingredients and stir. Adjust pH to about 5.5.
Hair care routine
Suggest the shampoo in every wash, the tonic massaged into the scalp afterwards and the mask once a week. Regular use for at least two to three months is the realistic timeframe for customers to judge changes in how fuller and stronger their hair looks. Clear guidance on the pack helps them stay with the routine.
Scalp massage
A one-minute scalp massage when applying the tonic improves the experience and spreads the product evenly. Applicator nozzles help target the scalp rather than the lengths.
Preservation
Botanical extracts can challenge preservative systems. Confirm with a challenge test.
Men's care
Onion shampoos and tonics appeal to men concerned about thin-looking hair. Simple packaging and a fresh herbal scent work well for this group.
Record the lot number in your batch log so every production run can be traced back to its certificate of analysis. Retain a small sample of each lot for at least the shelf life of the finished product, since it makes later quality questions much easier to answer.
Storage
Store the container closed in a cool place away from light.
