Description

This ingredient explained

Our card does not give the full composition; the supplier CoA confirms the INCI and the details for each lot. What the card does give is a broad list of uses and a working pH range of 4.5 to 6.5.

A wide application list

The record covers almost every water-based format. For the skin: serums, creams and emulsions, toners and essences, cleansers, body gels, lotions and balancing products. For hair: shampoos, scalp toners and cleansing formulas. Professional products are mentioned too. That breadth makes this ingredient a flexible ingredient for a brand that wants one botanical name across a full line.

Cleansing and balancing products

Face cleansers and toners

The Quillaja link fits a gentle cleansing story. A mild gel cleanser with soft surfactants and this ingredient, followed by a balancing toner, makes a simple two-step routine for combination skin. Keep the pH of both products inside the 4.5 to 6.5 window.

Shampoos and scalp toners

In hair care, a clarifying shampoo and a leave-on scalp toner can share the ingredient. The toner gives the longer contact time, while the shampoo carries the botanical message into the shower.

Leave-on care

Serums, essences and light creams use this ingredient in the water phase. Body gels and lotions extend it to larger areas. Because the card lists balancing products, a mattifying fluid for oily zones is another option.

Process

Add the ingredient to the water phase after cooling, or into the cold surfactant base at the end of a cleanser process. Stir gently to avoid foam if surfactants are present. Check pH at the end. The card does not state a level, so take it from the CoA.

Partners

Mild surfactants such as coco-glucoside or sodium cocoyl glutamate, humectants like glycerin and botanical extracts like Sea Fennel Marine Extract suit cleansers and toners. For a scalp tonic, Menthol Liquid adds a fresh note. Other actives are listed in our actives catalog.

Testing and documentation

Cleansers and leave-on products age differently, so test each one separately. Watch foam height, clarity and viscosity in cleansers, and pH, odor and color in toners and serums. Keep the CoA of each lot with the batch record and copy the full INCI from it into the label file. A natural ingredient may vary a little in color between lots, so compare each new delivery with a retained sample before production.

Characteristics

Form: liquid. Solubility: water. PH range: 4.5 to 6.5. Name reference: Quillaja tree. Listed uses: serums, creams, toners, essences, cleansers, body gels and lotions, balancing products, shampoos, scalp toners. INCI: supplier CoA.

Original recipe: balancing gel cleanser, 100 g

Distilled water 66.60 g, coco-glucoside 12.00 g, sodium cocoyl glutamate 8.00 g, glycerin 4.00 g, IO Plant cosmetic active Active Liquid 4.00 g, xanthan gum 0.60 g, panthenol 1.00 g, preservative 1.00 g, citric acid solution to target pH 2.80 g. Disperse the gum in glycerin, add water and surfactants, then the rest, and adjust pH to about 5.5.

Range planning

Start with the product that best expresses the Quillaja link, usually a gentle cleanser or a clarifying shampoo. Add a toner or a scalp tonic as the second step, and a light serum as the third. Using one botanical name across all three gives a clear story without a long ingredient list.

Record the lot number in your batch log so every production run can be traced back to its certificate of analysis. Retain a small sample of each lot for at least the shelf life of the finished product, since it makes later quality questions much easier to answer.

Storage

Store closed in a cool place away from light. Keep the lid clean and close it after use.
