Description
The skin barrier has become one of the central topics in skincare. Customers who once looked only for hydration now ask whether a product supports a healthy-feeling barrier. Ceramide-related ingredients are at the heart of that conversation. IO Oil-Soluble Barrier Active is an oil-soluble active whose name is associated in the market with this barrier-focused group.
What the barrier is
The outer layer of the skin is made of flattened cells surrounded by lipids: ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. These lipids form a structure that slows water loss and keeps the surface supple. When the barrier is stressed by cold, washing or harsh products, the skin feels dry and tight. Barrier creams aim to support a more comfortable, smoother-feeling surface.
Product data
Liquid, oil-soluble. The card does not list specific applications, so the concept should be built around the oil phase. The exact INCI, composition, heat tolerance and recommended level are confirmed on the supplier CoA for each lot.
Product formats
Barrier cream
An emulsion with the active in the oil phase, combined with humectants and plant butters.
Balm
An anhydrous balm for very dry areas such as hands, elbows and lips.
Oil serum
A light oil serum with the active for nightly use on dry skin.
Lip care
Lip balms and lip oils with a barrier story.
Formulating guidance
Add the active to the oil phase before emulsification if the CoA allows heating, or to the cooled oil blend for anhydrous products. Mix until uniform. Add an antioxidant such as tocopherol to protect the lipids. Combine with humectants in the water phase and with ceramide NP or vegetable ceramides if you want a recognized ceramide INCI on the label. More barrier ingredients are under actives.
Claims
Use cosmetic wording: comfortable, smoother, softer skin; less tight-feeling after washing. If you refer to ceramides, confirm on the CoA that the active contains them.
Who buys barrier care
Customers with dry, tight-feeling skin, those using strong actives such as retinoids and acids who want a supportive cream, and anyone in cold, dry climates.
Testing
Run stability at room temperature, 40 °C and in freeze-thaw cycles. Measure skin hydration and, if possible, water loss on the finished product.
Packaging
Tubes and airless pumps for creams; tins and sticks for balms. Simple, reassuring design suits barrier care.
Range planning
A barrier line with a cream, a balm and a lip product is easy to explain and suits winter campaigns.
Sensory design
Barrier products often feel heavy, which can discourage daily use. Balance the lipid phase with light esters so the cream spreads easily and absorbs within a few minutes, while butters and waxes give the protective feel customers expect. For balms, adjust the wax level to the climate: firmer for warm regions and softer for cold ones. Ask panelists to rate both immediate comfort and how the skin feels the next morning.
Lip care notes
Lips have a very thin barrier and dry out quickly in wind and cold.
