Description

What this ingredient is

Ceramide Barrier Complex is a ready-made ceramide concentrate. Instead of buying several crystalline lipids and melting them at high temperatures, a brand can add one complex through the aqueous phase of a product, as stated in our product record. The exact composition, including which ceramides and supporting lipids are present and in what amount, is printed on the CoA for each lot, and that is the document to use for your label. A related grade is listed separately as Ceramide Barrier Complex Ceramide Complex.

Why a complex instead of single ceramides

Ceramides are waxy, high-melting lipids that recrystallize easily and can feel grainy if they are not processed correctly. Pre-dispersed complexes solve this problem: the lipids are already arranged in a form that blends into water-based products. The result is a smoother process and a more reliable finished texture. In consumer language, ceramide products are associated with a comfortable, soft and well-moisturized look and with skin that feels less tight and dry.

Applications

Barrier creams, daily face moisturizers, body lotions, hand creams, foot creams, serums for dry-looking skin, gentle creams for children's skin care and after-sun lotions are all common formats. The complex pairs well with humectants such as Ultra low molecular sodium hyaluronate and with soothing actives like IO Soothing Plant Active Liquid. How to use it

Add the complex through the aqueous phase as stated in our record. Follow the temperature guidance on the CoA; many ceramide dispersions are added to the water phase before emulsification or to the cooled emulsion with gentle mixing. Avoid very high shear for long periods after addition. Take the use level from the CoA and keep the finished pH in a mild range close to that of skin.

Formulating a convincing barrier product

A strong barrier product combines three ideas: replenish lipids, attract water and reduce water loss. The ceramide complex covers the first; glycerin and hyaluronic acid cover the second; emollients and occlusives such as squalane, shea butter or a little dimethicone cover the third. Keep fragrance low, choose a pump or tube, and give the label simple instructions, such as twice-daily use on clean skin.

Compatibility

Ceramide complexes are generally compatible with nonionic emulsifiers, glycerin, niacinamide, panthenol, peptides and plant extracts. High levels of ethanol, strong anionic surfactants and very low pH can disturb dispersed lipids, so they are less suited to clear toners or cleansers. Avoid strong oxidizers. Check viscosity with carbomer gels, since some complexes contain their own thickeners.

Characteristics

Supply: pack sizes as shown in the selector. Addition: through the aqueous phase. INCI, lipid content and shelf life: on the CoA. Storage: cool, do not freeze.

Original recipe: daily barrier lotion, 100 g

Phase A: distilled water 72.30 g, glycerin 5.00 g, xanthan gum 0.20 g, Ceramide Barrier Complex 3.00 g dispersed in the water phase as directed on the CoA. Phase B: cetearyl olivate and sorbitan olivate 4.00 g, squalane 5.00 g, caprylic/capric triglyceride 5.00 g, shea butter 2.00 g. Heat and emulsify within the limits the CoA allows, then cool with gentle stirring. Phase C below 40 °C: panthenol 1.00 g, niacinamide 1.50 g dissolved in a little water, preservative 1.00 g. Mix until smooth and adjust pH to about 5.5.

Storage

Keep the container closed in a cool place, away from light and heat. Do not freeze, since freezing can destabilize dispersed lipids. Ships from Florida in the pack sizes shown above.
