Description
Plants that survive in the Atacama Desert live with almost no rain, intense sunlight and large temperature swings. Their resilience has inspired a group of cosmetic ingredients built around moisture and protection in harsh conditions. IO Moisture Active Liquid is a liquid active in this group, designed for products for dry, tight-feeling skin and for intensive hydration care.
Product data
This ingredient is a water-soluble liquid with a pH range of 4.5 to 6.5 according to the product card. It is added to the water phase. The precise INCI, botanical or biotechnological source and recommended level are confirmed on the supplier CoA for each lot.
Applications listed on the card
Skin care: facial serums, creams and emulsions, fluids and essences, dry skin care. Body care: lotions and creams, moisturizing products. Hair care: scalp tonics and moisturizing products. Professional cosmetology: intensive moisture programs, concentrates and device-assisted care. SPA and wellness programs.
Dry skin serums
A hydration serum built around the active, with humectants and a light film-former, creates a clear desert-resilience story.
Rich creams
Dry skin needs both water binders and lipids. Combine the active with barrier lipids in a cushioned cream.
Body care
Lotions for dry legs and arms, especially in winter or arid climates.
Scalp care
A tight, dry-feeling scalp is a common complaint in heated indoor air. A light scalp tonic with the active offers comfort without weighing down the hair.
Formulating notes
Add the active during cool-down, below about 40 °C, and keep the finished pH within 4.5 to 6.5. It combines well with hyaluronic acid, glycerin and barrier lipids. For a lipid partner, consider ceramide complex; for an additional humectant, hydroxyethyl urea works well in dry skin products. Other hydration concentrates are listed under actives.
Storytelling with integrity
Desert imagery is powerful, but the product claims must stay grounded. Use the origin information provided on the CoA, describe the moisture benefit in measurable terms and avoid implying that the active transfers plant survival abilities to skin. Instrumental hydration tests support claims such as long-lasting hydration and smoother, more comfortable skin.
Testing
Run stability at room temperature and 40 °C, checking pH, color, odor and viscosity. For dry skin claims, test on people who describe their skin as dry and record both instrument readings and their perception.
Packaging and seasonality
Hydration products sell strongly in autumn and winter. Consider a richer winter cream and a lighter summer fluid with the same active. Airless pumps protect water-based products and make dosing easy.
Pairing with lipids for dry skin
Water binders work best when the skin surface also keeps water from escaping. In dry skin products, combine the active with a lipid phase that includes plant butters, squalane and ceramide-type ingredients. This two-part approach gives a cream that feels comfortable immediately and stays comfortable for hours. In very dry climates or seasons, advise customers to apply the product to slightly damp skin after washing to make the most of the humectant effect.
