Description
Sugars are not only food. In skincare, certain sugars and sugar-based polymers bind water, form soft films and give a smooth, comfortable feel. Fucose, a sugar found in brown algae and in some microbial polysaccharides, has become a recognized name in this group. IO Marine Moisture Active Liquid is a liquid active associated with fucose-rich ingredients.
Product data
Liquid. Soluble in water and glycerin. The product card does not list specific applications. The exact INCI, source and recommended level are confirmed on the supplier CoA for each lot, which is the basis for the ingredient list.
Why sugar-based moisture
Sugar-based ingredients feel different from glycerin or hyaluronic acid. They often give a silky, cushioned film and a lasting comfortable feel. Combining them with other humectants creates layered hydration with a pleasant texture.
Product formats
Hydrating serum
A clear serum with this ingredient, hyaluronic acid and glycerin.
Gel moisturizer
A light gel for oily and combination skin that still needs hydration.
Cream
A cream for normal to dry skin, with the active in the water phase.
Essence
A thin essence for multi-step routines.
Formulating guidance
Add the active during cool-down into the water phase, or predissolve it in glycerin. Check the finished pH. Combine with high molecular weight hyaluronic acid for a surface film and with IO Moisturizing Polysaccharide Gel for a related sugar-based story. Browse the actives category for more hydration actives.
Claims
Use cosmetic wording: hydrated, smooth, comfortable skin. Support claims with hydration measurements on the finished product.
Who buys hydration products
Almost everyone. Hydration is the foundation of skincare and the first step for many new customers.
Marine or biotech story
Depending on the source stated on the CoA, the story can be marine or biotechnological. Use the documented source only.
Testing
Run stability at room temperature and 40 °C, checking viscosity, clarity and pH.
Packaging
Clear glass for serums, airless pumps for creams and gels.
Range planning
A hydration line with an essence, a serum and a gel moisturizer can share the active and offer a simple routine for different skin types.
Batch quality
Record the lot number, appearance and odor of each delivery and keep retained samples.
Texture tuning
Sugar-based actives can add a slight tack at higher levels. If a serum feels sticky, reduce the level slightly or add a light humectant such as propanediol, which improves slip without losing hydration.
Layering in a routine
Multi-step routines rely on light, layerable textures. An essence with this ingredient can follow cleansing, a serum can add concentrated hydration and a gel or cream can seal the routine. Because the active is water-soluble and has a soft feel, it layers without pilling, which is a common complaint when several products with film formers are combined. Test the full routine on skin, not only each product alone, to make sure the layers work together.
Climate considerations
In humid climates, light gels with sugar-based moisture are often preferred to rich creams. In dry or cold climates, combine the active with an occlusive cream to keep the hydration in.
Original recipe: silky hydration serum, 100 g
Purified water 85.40 g, glycerin 4.00 g, propanediol 3.00 g, IO Marine Moisture Active Liquid 4.00 g as an example level per CoA, sodium hyaluronate 0.20 g, hydroxyethylcellulose 0.50 g, panthenol 1.00 g, allantoin 0.10 g, preservative 1.00 g, citric acid solution 0.80 g. First wet out the cellulose and hyaluronate in the glycols; then add the water and stir until the gel is even. Add the active, panthenol and allantoin below 40 °C, then the preservative. Adjust pH to about 5.5.
Storage
Store sealed in a cool area away from light.
