Pure melatonin is a fine powder that dissolves poorly in water and usually needs glycols or alcohol before it goes into a base. Add the liquid during cool-down, below 40 °C, and stir gently rather than homogenizing at high shear, which can break liposomes. Keep the finished pH in the mild range most leave-on creams already use.

It works alongside antioxidants such as glutathione and moisture actives like niacinamide or panthenol. Avoid strong surfactant loads and high alcohol levels, which can disrupt the vesicles.
