Description
L-carnosine is one of the smallest peptides used in cosmetics, made from just two building blocks: beta-alanine and L-histidine. It occurs naturally in the body, especially in muscle tissue, and has been studied for its antioxidant behavior and for its ability to react with sugars. In skincare it is used in serums and creams that address dullness and stiffness, often described with the term glycation.
Physical form
We supply L-carnosine as needle crystals sold by weight. It dissolves readily in water. The supplier specification uses a generic template in some fields; the specification and recommended level are confirmed on the CoA for each lot.
Understanding glycation in plain language
Sugars in the body can attach to proteins over time, forming compounds that make proteins stiffer and can contribute to a yellowish, dull look. Skincare brands use the word glycation to describe this effect and choose ingredients such as carnosine for products that position themselves against it. Keep claims cosmetic and visual: brighter-looking, more supple-looking, fresher skin.
Uses in face care
Antioxidant serum
A clear serum combining carnosine with a vitamin derivative and a humectant is a simple and convincing product.
Creams
In day creams, carnosine supports a protective, antioxidant-led story together with tocopherol and plant extracts.
Eye contour
Its gentle, water-soluble nature suits eye gels and light creams.
Uses in body care
The supplier specification lists body creams, body-contouring creams, body wraps and body shaping mixtures. In these products, carnosine can be combined with caffeine and hydration ingredients for a firm-looking, smooth-looking skin concept.
Formulating guidance
Dissolve the crystals in the water phase. Carnosine tolerates moderate heat, but adding it during cool-down is the safer habit for all peptide ingredients. Check the pH of the finished product after addition. It pairs well with niacinamide and with resveratrol in an antioxidant concept. For a ready-encapsulated format, see our Carnosine in Liposomes. The full range of dry peptides is in peptide powders.
Writing the label
The INCI name commonly used for this material is Carnosine; confirm it against the CoA. A cosmetic product describes how skin looks and feels.
Combining antioxidants
Antioxidant ingredients often work best in teams. A water-soluble ingredient such as carnosine complements oil-soluble tocopherol, and the two can sit in different phases of the same cream. This approach makes a balanced label and a clear story for customers interested in protective daily care.
Sourcing and quality notes
On arrival, compare the appearance with the description on the CoA: fine white needle crystals without discoloration or unusual odor. Store a retained sample from each lot. Prepare a small test solution to confirm clarity before adding the material to a large batch. If the crystals have clumped because of humidity, they can still dissolve normally, but this is a sign that the pack should be closed more carefully between uses. Clean, dry scoops help keep the material free flowing for its full shelf life.
