Description
Some actives arrive with a strongly acidic pH, and that single property shapes the whole formula around them. IO Hydrating Acidic Active is a liquid active listed as water-soluble with a pH range of 2.6 to 3.
Product data
Liquid, water-soluble, pH 2.6 to 3.5 for the material. The card does not list specific applications. The exact INCI, composition and recommended level are confirmed on the supplier CoA for each lot, and that document is the reference for the ingredient list.
Working with an acidic active
Adding an acidic material lowers the pH of the batch. Measure the pH after addition and adjust with a suitable base, such as sodium hydroxide or sodium citrate solution, to the range your preservative and other ingredients need. Carbomer thickeners lose viscosity at low pH, so xanthan gum, hydroxyethylcellulose or acid-tolerant polymers are usually a safer choice.
Product formats
Hydrating toner
A watery toner applied after cleansing.
Serum
A light serum with layered humectants.
Gel cream
A fresh texture for oily and combination skin.
Body lotion
A light lotion for daily use after the shower.
Formulating guidance
Add the active during cool-down into the water phase. Combine it with humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid liquid, and with D-Panthenol for comfort. In a radiance concept, niacinamide is a good partner once the finished pH is raised to its preferred range. Ingredients that pair well with this ingredient are collected under actives.
Claims
Use cosmetic wording such as hydrated, smooth and fresh-feeling skin. Base any numbers on hydration measurements of the finished product.
Stability
Watch pH drift during storage. Acidic actives can change the color of some fragrances and botanical extracts; run compatibility tests before scale-up.
Testing
Run stability at room temperature and 40 °C, checking pH, viscosity and appearance at each time point.
Packaging
Plastic or glass bottles with chemically resistant closures; check that pumps and droppers tolerate the finished pH.
Range planning
A toner, serum and gel cream trio gives a simple hydration routine around one active.
Batch quality
Record the lot number from the CoA, check pH and appearance on arrival and keep retained samples.
Preservation
Choose a preservative system that works at your final pH. Organic acid preservatives work best in acidic formulas, while some others need a near-neutral pH.
Original recipe: hydrating toner, 100 g
Purified water 86.80 g, glycerin 4.00 g, propanediol 3.00 g, IO Hydrating Acidic Active 2.00 g as an example level per CoA, panthenol 1.00 g, sodium hyaluronate 0.10 g, allantoin 0.10 g, preservative 1.00 g, sodium citrate solution 2.00 g. Dissolve glycerin, propanediol and hyaluronate in water and hydrate. Add panthenol and allantoin, then the active and preservative. Adjust pH to about 5.0 with sodium citrate solution.
Who the products are for
A hydration line built around this active suits customers with dehydrated, tight-feeling skin, people who live in dry climates or air-conditioned offices and those who prefer light, watery textures over rich creams. The toner and serum work well for younger skin, while the gel cream can anchor a minimalist routine.
Sensory design
Light hydration products should leave skin fresh rather than tacky. Balance glycerin with propanediol or betaine, keep total humectants moderate and test the after-feel five minutes after application. A watery toner that absorbs quickly feels like a premium product even with a short ingredient list.
Working with the acidity in practice
Write the pH adjustment into the batch record with the amount of base used for each lot. Since raw material pH can vary within the listed range, the amount of base can change slightly from lot to lot, and a recorded target makes scale-up repeatable.
Storage
Keep the container closed, cool and protected from light.
