Description
Cutissential 18-MEA in short
Cutissential 18-MEA is a hair care active from the United States that rebuilds the look of the natural lipid layer on the hair cuticle. Its INCI is C10-40 Isoalkylamidopropylethyldimonium Ethosulfate (and) Dipropylene Glycol. It is an amber liquid to paste with a mild odor. The key advantage is solubility: it is a water-soluble 18-MEA type lipid, so it goes straight into water and surfactant systems. The use level is 1 to 3% and the working pH is 5.0 to 8.0. People searching for Cutissential 18-MEA or Cutissential Behenyl 18-MEA usually want this INCI and these numbers.
What 18-MEA does in hair
18-methyleicosanoic acid, known as 18-MEA, is the main lipid bound to the outer surface of healthy hair. It makes the fiber water-repellent and smooth. Bleaching, coloring, perming and heat styling strip this layer, and hair then feels rough, tangles easily and looks dull. Cutissential 18-MEA is designed to replace the look and feel of that lost layer.
Benefits in finished products
The supplier describes a restored lipid layer, a water-repellent feel and better integrity of the look of the fiber, with protection against chemical services and environmental stress. Consumers notice smoother, shinier hair that combs easily. Claims should stay cosmetic and sensory: smoother, shinier, easier to comb, less frizz.
Where to use it
Shampoos and conditioners
Shampoos, 2-in-1 products and conditioners are the main formats. Because the active dissolves in surfactants, it is easy to add to clear shampoos.
Masks and leave-ins
Intensive appearance support masks, leave-in sprays and creams and styling products for damaged, dry or chemically treated hair use the upper end of the range.
Curly and textured hair
Care for curly and textured hair benefits from the smoothing, anti-frizz feel.
Processing guidance
Add Cutissential 18-MEA after cooling, below 40 °C, and stir until uniform. Short heating up to 80 °C is tolerated, so it can also be added to a hot product if your process requires it. Keep the final pH between 5.0 and 8.0. It works with cationic emulsions, amphoteric surfactants and silicones. Pair it with behentrimonium chloride in rich conditioners and with hydrolyzed keratin for a complete appearance support message. Other appearance support and conditioning concentrates can be found in our actives catalog.
Sample recipe: appearance support conditioner, 100 g
Distilled water 84.20 g, cetearyl alcohol 5.00 g, behentrimonium chloride 2.50 g, glycerin 2.00 g, Cutissential 18-MEA 2.00 g, hydrolyzed keratin 1.00 g, D-panthenol 0.50 g, preservative 1.00 g, fragrance 0.40 g, citric acid solution 1.40 g. Heat water and glycerin to about 70 °C, melt the fatty alcohol with the conditioner, emulsify, cool below 40 °C, add Cutissential 18-MEA, keratin, panthenol, preservative and fragrance and adjust the pH to about 5.0.
Testing claims
Bleached tresses are the classic test. Compare combing force, frizz and shine between a base and a version with 2% Cutissential 18-MEA. A simple water drop test on the tress shows the water-repellent effect very clearly and makes good visual material.
Who buys it
Color and bleach clients, curly hair communities and salon brands look for leave-on cosmetic formulas products that work after the first wash. A clear 18-MEA story is widely recognized in hair care.
Formulation tips for clear shampoos
In transparent shampoos, add the active after the main surfactants and before the final salt adjustment. Check clarity and viscosity, since cationic actives can interact with anionic surfactants at high levels. Starting at 1% and increasing in small steps helps you find the best balance of conditioning and clarity.
Storage
Store in a cool, dark place in a tightly closed container.
