Description
What Centella Asiatica Oil Extract is
Centella asiatica is a small creeping plant from tropical Asia, known as gotu kola and, in K-beauty marketing, as tiger grass. This product is an oil extract: the plant material is macerated or extracted into a lipid carrier, which carries its oil-soluble components. Our product record lists it as soluble in fats, lipids and oils. The carrier oil, full INCI and recommended level are printed on the CoA for each lot. If you need a water-soluble ingredient on the same theme, see IO Soothing Plant Active Liquid.
Properties
The oil extract brings the botanical identity of centella into oil-based products. It is valued for comforting, calming-feel skin care and gives facial oils and balms a strong ingredient story that shoppers recognize. Its feel depends on the carrier oil: light carriers absorb quickly, while richer ones leave a nourishing film. Color and scent can vary between harvests, which is normal for botanical extracts.
Applications
The record lists face and body creams, lotions, shampoos, bath products, bath bombs, professional cosmetics and handmade cosmetics. Popular formats include calming facial oils, lip and cheek balms, body butters, massage oils, rich night creams and scalp oils. It combines well with Ceramide NP in barrier creams and with squalane in light oils. Explore more plant ingredients in our botanical extracts catalog.
How to use it
In anhydrous products, blend the extract into the oil base once it has cooled below about 40 °C. In emulsions, add it to the oil phase near the end of heating or to the cooled emulsion, depending on how heat-sensitive the CoA says the components are. Add an antioxidant such as tocopherol to protect the oils. Take the use level from the CoA.
Formulating oil-based products
Facial oils with a botanical extract should balance absorption and nourishment. Combine a light ester or squalane with a richer plant oil and the centella extract, and add tocopherol. Balms need a wax and a butter for structure; melt them first, cool slightly, then add the extract. For bath products, include an emulsifier such as polysorbate 80 so that the oil disperses in water instead of floating.
Compatibility
The extract mixes with plant oils, esters, squalane, butters, waxes and oil-soluble vitamins. It is not water-soluble and will separate from purely aqueous products unless an emulsifier is present. Avoid strong oxidizers and prolonged high heat. Store finished products away from light to slow oxidation. In emulsions, the extract can replace part of the oil phase, which keeps the total lipid content unchanged and the texture predictable; adjust the emulsifier only if the new oil blend is much more polar than the original one.
Characteristics
Form: oil extract. Solubility: fats, lipids, oils; not water-soluble. Botanical source: Centella asiatica. Carrier oil, INCI and shelf life: on the CoA. Supply: pack sizes as shown in the selector.
Original recipe: calming facial oil, 100 g
In a clean, dry beaker combine squalane 45.00 g, caprylic/capric triglyceride 25.00 g, jojoba oil 14.50 g and sunflower seed oil 5.00 g. Add Centella Asiatica Oil Extract 10.00 g and tocopherol 0.50 g. Stir gently until uniform. Fill into amber glass dropper bottles. Apply a few drops to slightly damp skin in the evening, alone or mixed into a moisturizer.
Record the lot number in your batch log so every production run can be traced back to its certificate of analysis. Retain a small sample of each lot for at least the shelf life of the finished product, since it makes later quality questions much easier to answer.
Storage
Keep the container closed in a cool, dark place. Use clean, dry tools to prevent water entering the oil. Close the container straight after use to limit air contact. Ships from Florida in the pack sizes shown above.
