Description
Botamix at a glance
Botamix Skin Care Active Concentrate is a ready made blend of three plant extracts for face care. It joins centella asiatica, papaya and iris in a base of glycerin and water. The INCI is Glycerin, Water, Centella Asiatica Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract, Carica Papaya (Papaya) Fruit Extract, Iris Florentina Root Extract. The liquid is yellow to dark brown with a characteristic plant odor, dissolves in water and is used at 2 to 5% of the finished product. It is made in Germany and is added to the active phase of a formula.
The three plants
Centella asiatica
Centella, also called gotu kola or tiger grass, is one of the stars of Korean and Asian skin care. It is known for skin that looks calmer, smoother and firmer, and for a comfortable feel in products for sensitive and stressed skin. The extract here uses the whole aerial plant, flower, leaf and stem.
Papaya
Papaya fruit is famous for its natural enzyme, papain, which gently loosens dead cells on the skin surface. In cosmetics papaya extract gives a smoother, brighter looking complexion without the sharp feel of acids.
Iris
Iris root, also known as orris, has been used in perfumery and cosmetics since antiquity. In skin care it is associated with a refined, soft and even looking skin texture.
What the blend does
Together the three extracts build a balanced care profile. Botamix helps skin look smoother, calmer and more even, gives a fresh, renewed look and supports skin that is stressed by sun and daily life. The supplier also mentions products for oily and blemish prone looking skin, where the gentle enzyme action and the comfort of centella work well together. Keep claims cosmetic and visual.
How to formulate
Add the blend to the active phase at 2 to 5%. In a cold process gel or serum it can be added directly to the water. In an emulsion, add it at cool-down below 40 °C, which protects the fruit enzymes from heat. Keep the finished pH at about 5 to 6. The dark color can show in white creams, so start at 2% in pale formulas and test the shade. For a calming serum, it works next to centella asiatica extract TECA for a stronger centella story and next to niacinamide for a more even looking tone. More plant based actives are listed in the cosmetic actives section.
Product ideas
Calming face creams, serums for stressed skin, gentle renewing masks, toners, after-sun gels, balancing fluids for oily skin and night creams are the main uses. The centella part makes the blend a good fit for products inspired by Korean skin care.
