Description
Most actives tolerate a broad pH window. IO Antioxidant Active Liquid is different: its card gives a working range of 3.5 to 4.5, a clearly acidic window. That single fact shapes the products it fits best, from toners and serums to scalp tonics, and it is the first thing to consider when planning a formula.
Roles listed on the card
Antioxidant. Skin-conditioning agent. Soothing agent. Active for thicker-looking hair. The ingredient is a water-soluble liquid. The exact INCI, composition and recommended level are confirmed on the supplier CoA for each lot.
Formats that suit an acidic range
Toners
Acidic toners are common and well accepted. A toner with this ingredient, humectants and a soothing ingredient fits the card naturally.
Serums
Clear gel serums with an acid-tolerant thickener such as xanthan gum or hydroxyethylcellulose.
Scalp tonics
Scalp products for thicker-looking hair can be formulated at acidic pH, which also suits the hair surface.
Formulating guidance
Add the active during cool-down and adjust the finished pH to 3.5 to 4.5. Choose a preservative that works at this pH; many organic acid systems are effective in this range. Check emulsifier stability if you make an emulsion, since some emulsifiers lose performance at low pH. Combine with humectants and soothing ingredients such as D-Panthenol and with IO Mineral Complex Liquid if you want a broader mineral story in a separate product. Find more concentrates under actives.
Comfort at low pH
Acidic products can tingle on sensitive skin. Balance the formula with glycerin, panthenol and a soothing agent, keep alcohol low and leave out fragrance in sensitive skin versions. Test tolerance on a panel.
Claims
Use cosmetic wording: protected-feeling, comfortable, conditioned skin; thicker-looking, fuller-looking hair. Support with tests on the finished product.
Testing
Measure pH at each stability checkpoint; drift outside 3.5 to 4.5 indicates a problem with buffering or with interactions. Check color and odor.
Range ideas
A toner and a scalp tonic can share the same acidic base and the same active, making a simple two-product line.
Quality records
Record the lot number from each CoA, check pH and appearance on arrival and keep a retained sample.
Who it suits
Formulators who like working with acidic toners and tonics, and brands building minimal routines with a few multifunctional products. The combination of antioxidant, conditioning and soothing roles in one ingredient helps keep labels short.
Buffering tips
At pH 3.5 to 4.5 a small citrate or lactate buffer helps keep the finished product stable through its shelf life. Prepare the buffer in the water phase, add the active, and make final adjustments in small steps while measuring.
Choosing the right thickener
Acidic products narrow the list of thickeners. Carbomers lose viscosity at low pH, so choose xanthan gum, hydroxyethylcellulose or acid-tolerant associative polymers. For emulsions, glucoside and polyglyceryl emulsifiers are good starting points. Always measure viscosity after the pH adjustment, not before.
Original recipe: acidic comfort toner, 100 g
Purified water 87.90 g, glycerin 3.00 g, butylene glycol 3.00 g, IO Antioxidant Active Liquid 3.00 g as an example level per CoA, panthenol 1.00 g, allantoin 0.10 g, sodium benzoate 0.40 g, potassium sorbate 0.20 g, sodium citrate solution 1.40 g. Dissolve the preservatives in water, add glycols, panthenol and allantoin, then the active. Adjust pH to 4.0 with the citrate solution and check after twenty-four hours.
Storage
Keep tightly closed in a cool place away from light. Reseal after use.
