Description
Antioxidants are the backbone of protective skincare. Many of the best-known ones, such as vitamin C, are unstable and difficult to formulate. Ergothioneine, often shortened to EGT, has attracted attention because it is a naturally occurring antioxidant that tends to be more stable in formulas. Amino Acid Antioxidant Liquid is a water-soluble liquid active built around this molecule.
About ergothioneine
Ergothioneine is an amino acid derivative made by certain fungi and bacteria. Humans obtain it from food, especially mushrooms. In skin science it has been studied for its antioxidant behavior. In cosmetics it is used in protective, appearance-focused cosmetic and day care products. The exact INCI and ergothioneine content of this ingredient are confirmed on the supplier CoA for each lot.
Specifications from the card
Liquid, water-soluble. Applications: sunscreens, appearance-focused cosmetic, antioxidants, protection and cosmetic appearance support-look care.
Product formats
Protective day serum
A light serum used in the morning under sunscreen, focused on antioxidant protection.
appearance-focused cosmetic cream
Day and night creams that combine the antioxidant with peptides and hydration ingredients.
Sun-care companion
The card lists sunscreens. In regulated markets, sunscreens follow strict rules; the active can be added to the water phase of a sunscreen emulsion or sold in a separate antioxidant serum used under sunscreen.
After-sun
Soothing gels and lotions used after sun exposure can carry an antioxidant story.
Formulating guidance
Add the active during cool-down into the water phase and check the finished pH. Ergothioneine is relatively stable, but good practice still applies: minimize air, use opaque packaging and add a chelating agent if your water contains metals. Combine with other antioxidants for a broad concept, such as ferulic acid and vitamin E. More protective actives are listed under actives.
Claims
Use cosmetic wording: helps protect skin from the look of environmental stress, supports a fresh, healthy-looking complexion. Avoid claims about sun protection factors unless the finished product is tested and regulated as a sunscreen.
Who buys antioxidant products
City dwellers, outdoor enthusiasts and people interested in prevention-focused skincare. They read labels, look for named antioxidants and value a clear explanation of what each ingredient does.
Mushroom story
The link between ergothioneine and mushrooms makes a memorable story. Use it carefully: explain that ergothioneine is found in mushrooms, without claiming that the ingredient is extracted from them unless the CoA says so.
Testing
Run stability at room temperature, 40 °C and under light exposure. Check pH, color and odor.
Packaging
Airless pumps and opaque bottles support any antioxidant concept and signal care to customers.
Building a layered antioxidant routine
Antioxidants work as a team. A water-soluble ingredient such as ergothioneine fits the water phase, while tocopherol and other lipid antioxidants protect the oil phase. A morning serum with this ingredient followed by a moisturizer with vitamin E and a sunscreen forms a simple, well-explained routine. Customers understand this logic quickly when the product page shows each step and its role.
Original recipe: antioxidant morning serum, 100 g
Purified water 84.40 g, glycerin 4.00 g, propanediol 3.00 g, Amino Acid Antioxidant Liquid 3.00 g as an example level per CoA, niacinamide 2.00 g, sodium hyaluronate 0.20 g, hydroxyethylcellulose 0.60 g, panthenol 1.00 g, sodium phytate 0.10 g, preservative 1.00 g, citric acid solution 0.70 g. Start by dispersing the cellulose and hyaluronate in the glycols; add the water and let it hydrate fully. Add sodium phytate, niacinamide, panthenol and the active below 40 °C, then the preservative. Adjust pH to about 5.5 to 6.0.
Storage
Store sealed in a cool place, out of direct light, and close the bottle right after dispensing.
