Description

Spermaceti (Cetyl Palmitate) at a glance

This spermaceti is a crystal powder of cetyl palmitate. According to the supplier specification, hot alcohol and essential oils dissolve it readily, while water does not. Cetyl palmitate is a wax ester made by joining cetyl alcohol with palmitic acid. It is the modern replacement for the animal spermaceti once used in cold creams. Confirm grade and melting point on the supplier CoA.

Decorative cosmetics

The supplier specification puts special weight on makeup. In lipsticks, cetyl palmitate helps build a stick that glides smoothly and holds its shape. In eye shadows and pressed powders, it acts as a binder that helps the powder stick together and spread evenly. In mascara, it adds body to the wax blend. In foundation sticks and concealer pencils, it gives structure and a smooth payoff.

Product formats

Lipsticks

Smooth glide and structure.

Eye shadows

Binding for pressed powders.

Mascara

Body in the wax phase.

Foundation bases and concealer pencils

Creamy structure and good pigment spread.

Creams for dry skin and body creams

Richness and a velvety finish.

Hair masks and conditioners

Creamy texture and a smooth feel on hair.

Processing

Melt it with the other waxes and oils at around 70 to 75 °C. In makeup, add pigments to the melted wax blend and grind or mill until smooth. In emulsions, add it to the oil phase before emulsifying.

Good partners

Vegetable spermaceti is a related wax. Candelilla wax adds firmness to lipsticks, and Calcium stearate helps pressed powders bind. Browse more in the actives catalog.

Testing

Check stick hardness at different temperatures, payoff on the skin and texture of creams over time.

Claims

Smooth glide; creamy texture; even color payoff; skin feels soft.

Characteristics

Form: crystal powder. Solubility: readily in hot alcohol and essential oils; not in water. Type: wax ester. Listed uses: lipsticks, shadows, mascara, foundation bases, concealer pencils, creams for dry skin, body creams, hair masks and conditioners. Grade: supplier CoA.

Original recipe: creamy lipstick base, 100 g

Castor oil 45.00 g, candelilla wax 12.00 g, cetyl palmitate 8.00 g, beeswax 6.00 g, jojoba oil 10.00 g, shea butter 5.00 g, iron oxide red 3.00 g, titanium dioxide 1.50 g, mica 8.00 g, tocopherol 1.00 g, flavor 0.50 g. Grind the pigments into part of the castor oil, melt the waxes and butters with the remaining oils, add the pigment paste and mica, mix until smooth, add tocopherol and flavor and pour into molds.

Stick stability

Lipsticks must stay firm in a warm handbag yet glide easily on the lips. Test sticks at 40 °C and in the fridge, and check for sweating or blooming on the surface.

Pigment dispersion

A smooth, even color depends on good pigment grinding. Use a three-roll mill or a high-speed mixer and check the paste for specks before combining.

Caring emulsions

In creams for dry skin, cetyl palmitate adds body and a velvety finish. It pairs well with butters and fatty alcohols for a rich texture.

Range ideas

A lipstick, an eye shadow palette and a body cream can share cetyl palmitate across makeup and care.

Lot records

Keep each CoA with the batch file and note the lot used.

Choosing between wax esters

Cetyl palmitate is softer than candelilla or carnauba and harder than many butters. That middle position makes it useful for fine-tuning the texture of sticks and creams. Swap small amounts between waxes in trial batches to find the right balance.

Lab tip

Add the crystals to the melted wax blend slowly and stir until the mix is fully clear before adding pigments.

Storage

Store closed in a cool place. Close the container after use.
