Description

Vegetable Spermaceti at a glance

Vegetable Spermaceti comes as white glossy wax-like lamellar crystals with almost no taste or odor. The supplier specification states that it dissolves easily in hot alcohol and essential oils and is insoluble in water. It replaces the traditional animal spermaceti with a plant-based wax ester, typically cetyl palmitate. Check the INCI name and melting point on the supplier CoA.

A wax with history

Spermaceti has been used in creams for centuries because it gives a smooth, pearly texture. Today the plant-based version offers the same benefits without animal sourcing. It thickens emulsions, adds a velvety feel and gives products a subtle gloss.

Product formats

Creams and lotions

Body and consistency with a velvety finish.

Conditioners

Thicker, creamier conditioners.

Shampoos and shower gels

A pearly look and a creamy texture.

Decorative cosmetics

Structure in lipsticks, eye shadows and foundations.

Products with pigments

Helps disperse and hold pigments.

Processing

Melt the crystals with the oil phase at about 70 to 75 °C and emulsify. In surfactant products, melt it into a warm portion of the base and cool slowly while stirring to create a pearly effect.

Good partners

Cetyl palmitate is a closely related product. Candelilla wax adds hardness to sticks, and Rice bran wax suits balms. Browse more in the actives catalog.

Testing

Check viscosity and texture over time, especially in warm storage. Assess the pearly effect in surfactant products.

Claims

Velvety, rich texture; pearly gloss; plant-based alternative to animal wax.

Characteristics

Form: wax-like lamellar crystals. Solubility: easy in hot alcohol and essential oils, insoluble in water. Listed uses: creams, shampoos, shower gels, conditioners, lotions, high-water cosmetics, decorative cosmetics, products with pigments. INCI: supplier CoA.

Original recipe: velvet body cream, 100 g

Distilled water 66.70 g, glycerin 4.00 g, vegetable spermaceti 3.00 g, sunflower oil 8.00 g, shea butter 5.00 g, glyceryl stearate citrate 4.50 g, cetearyl alcohol 2.00 g, squalane 4.00 g, xanthan gum 0.30 g, phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin 1.00 g, tocopherol 0.50 g, fragrance 1.00 g. Melt the spermaceti with the oils and emulsifiers, emulsify into the hot water phase, cool and add the remaining ingredients.

Pearly effects

In shampoos and shower gels, wax esters can crystallize into tiny platelets as the product cools, creating a soft pearly shine. Slow cooling while stirring gives the best effect.

Makeup uses

In lipsticks and foundation sticks, the wax adds structure and helps pigments spread evenly.

Range ideas

A body cream, a conditioner and a lip balm can share this plant-based wax.

Lot records

Keep each CoA with the batch file and note the lot used.

Choosing the level

Small amounts give creams a slightly richer feel and a soft gloss, while larger amounts make a thick, buttery cream. In sticks and balms it works together with harder waxes. Make a few trial batches at different levels to find the texture you want.

Stability

Waxes can change the texture of an emulsion over the first weeks as they crystallize. Check viscosity after one day, one week and one month, both at room temperature and at 40 °C. Slow cooling during production helps the wax set evenly.

Plant-based claims

If the product is marketed as vegan, confirm with the supplier that the wax and all processing aids are free from animal sources.

Lab tip

Add the wax in flakes to speed up melting and stir until fully clear.

Record the lot number in your batch log so every production run can be traced back to its certificate of analysis. Retain a small sample of each lot for at least the shelf life of the finished product, since it makes later quality questions much easier to answer.

Storage

Store closed in a cool place. Close the container after use.
