Processing

Add pentylene glycol to the water phase at any stage; it tolerates heat. For extracts, premix them in pentylene glycol before adding water.

Partners

Preservation support

Pentylene glycol supports preservation, but it is rarely enough alone. Run a preservative efficacy test on every final formula, even when you lower the main preservative.

Original recipe: light hydrating toner, 100 g

Distilled water 88.50 g, pentylene glycol 4.00 g, glycerin 3.00 g, natural moisturizing factor (NMF) 2.00 g, panthenol 1.00 g, preservative 0.80 g, polysorbate 20 0.50 g, citric acid solution to target pH 0.20 g. Dissolve everything in water and check the pH.

Working with extracts

Many plant extracts are supplied in glycols or need help to dissolve. Premixing a powdered or oily extract with pentylene glycol before adding water often gives a clearer, more even product. This also helps prevent specks and sediment in toners and serums. Record the premix ratio in the batch sheet so later batches match.

Record the lot number in your batch log so every production run can be traced back to its certificate of analysis. Retain a small sample of each lot for at least the shelf life of the finished product, since it makes later quality questions much easier to answer.

Storage

Store closed at room temperature. Close the container after use.
