Description
Some actives force the formulator to plan the whole product around them. IO Oil-Soluble Smoothing Active is more flexible. Its card lists solubility in oils, emollients and silicones, and use in emulsions, which means it can go into almost any product with an oil component, from a light serum to a rich balm.
What the card tells us
Liquid, oil-soluble. Compatible with oils, emollients, silicones and emulsions. PH range 4.5 to 6.0 for finished products. Applications: moisturizers, creams, balms and serums. The exact INCI, composition and active content are confirmed on the supplier CoA for each lot.
Formats
Daily moisturizer
A light emulsion for morning and evening use. Add the active to the oil phase.
Night cream
A richer emulsion with plant butters for dry and mature skin.
Balm
Anhydrous balms for the face, lips and dry areas. The active blends directly into the melted base at a moderate temperature.
Silicone serum
Silky, fast-absorbing serums based on silicones or silicone alternatives. The active's compatibility with silicones makes it a natural fit.
Formulating guidance
Add the active to the oil phase or blend it into anhydrous bases. If you add it to a finished emulsion, use good mixing to distribute it evenly. Keep the finished pH within 4.5 to 6.0 as listed on the card. Protect the batch and the finished product from excessive heat, light and air, and add an antioxidant such as mixed tocopherols. For a sister ingredient with a lipid carrier, see IO Oil-Soluble Lipid Active. More oil-soluble actives are listed under actives.
Claims
Describe the result as smoother-looking, softer and more even-looking skin and a comfortable feel. If you refer to bakuchiol, confirm its presence and content on the CoA first. Support claims with tests on the finished product.
Routine advice
Products in this group are often recommended for evening use, followed by sunscreen in the morning. They are usually well suited to regular use; advise customers to start gradually and to stop if irritation occurs.
Who buys it
Customers looking for plant-based alternatives in appearance-focused cosmetic care, those with sensitive-feeling skin and those who prefer creams and balms to thin serums. A clean, botanical presentation suits the concept.
Packaging
Airless pumps and tubes reduce air contact. For balms, use tins or sticks with a small surface. Opaque materials protect sensitive ingredients.
Testing
Run stability at room temperature, 40 °C and with light exposure. Check odor and color for signs of oxidation and check emulsion stability at the target pH.
Batch documentation
Record the lot number and appearance of each delivery and keep a retained sample. If a finished product shows color drift, compare the lots used before adjusting the formula.
Choosing emollient partners
Because this ingredient mixes with oils, esters and silicones alike, the choice of emollients defines the feel of the final product. Light esters and volatile silicone alternatives create a fast, dry finish suited to morning use. Plant butters and squalane give a richer, slower feel for night creams and balms. Test two or three emollient blends side by side and choose the one that suits your target customer before finalizing the active level.
Original recipe: smoothing night balm, 100 g

Melt the wax and shea butter with the triglyceride at about 70 °C, stir in jojoba oil and squalane, cool to about 45 °C and add tocopherol, bisabolol and the active.
