Description
Some cosmetic ingredients are chosen not for a claim but for what they make possible in the lab. IO Liquid Emulsifier is a liquid from this ingredient range whose card describes an unusually broad compatibility: soluble in water and miscible with oils, glycerin, propylene glycol and surfactants.
Data from the card
Liquid. Soluble in water; miscible with oils, glycerin, propylene glycol and surfactants. PH range 4.0 to 7.0. The card does not list specific applications. The exact INCI, function and recommended level are confirmed on the supplier CoA for each lot, and that document should guide your formula.
Why broad compatibility helps
A formulator often needs to bring together ingredients that do not mix easily: a fragrance oil in a clear water-based toner, a plant oil in a cleansing gel, a glycol extract in an emulsion. Ingredients that are compatible with both water and oil phases can help bridge them. Check the CoA to confirm whether this ingredient acts as a solubilizer, co-emulsifier, emollient or another function before relying on it for a specific role.
Testing ideas
Clear toner with fragrance
Test whether the ingredient helps keep a small amount of fragrance clear in water.
Mild cleansing gel
Test its compatibility with your surfactant system and its effect on mildness and feel.
Cream or lotion
Test its effect on texture, spreading and stability in an emulsion.
Formulating guidance
Start with a small test series at the level recommended on the CoA. Measure the pH of the finished product and keep it within 4.0 to 7.0. Record clarity, viscosity and stability at room temperature and at 40 °C. Compare with your standard solubilizer or co-emulsifier. Related helpers in our catalog include hydrogenated lecithin and vegetable glycerin. More ingredients are listed under actives.
Documentation first
Because the card does not list a specific function, documentation matters. Keep the CoA and any technical data sheet with your formula records, and use the exact INCI on the label.
Who uses such ingredients
Formulators of clean, minimal products who want to reduce the number of different helpers, and brands that prefer ingredients from a recognized range.
Claims
A helper ingredient rarely carries a consumer claim. If it contributes to a gentler or smoother product, describe the finished product's feel rather than the ingredient's role.
Stability program
Test each formula at room temperature, 40 °C and in freeze-thaw cycles. Watch for haze in clear products and separation in emulsions.
A structured test plan
When an ingredient's role is defined by documentation rather than by a familiar name, a structured plan saves time. Prepare three versions of each test product: without the ingredient, at the low end of the CoA range and at the high end. Compare clarity, viscosity, foam (for cleansers), spreading (for creams) and stability after two and four weeks. Ask two or three people to rate feel without knowing which version they are testing. The results show quickly whether this ingredient brings a clear benefit to a given product and at what level. Record every observation with the lot number so the findings can be repeated later.
Original recipe: test toner with fragrance, 100 g
Purified water 89.80 g, glycerin 3.00 g, propylene glycol 2.00 g, IO Liquid Emulsifier 3.00 g as an example level per CoA, fragrance 0.20 g, panthenol 1.00 g, preservative 0.80 g, citric acid solution 0.20 g. Premix fragrance with IO Liquid Emulsifier, add glycerin and propylene glycol, then add slowly to the water with stirring. Add panthenol and preservative and adjust pH to about 5.5. Check clarity after twenty-four hours.
Storage
Store it closed in a cool, dry area out of light.
