Description

Styling products are moving away from purely synthetic polymers, and plant-based alternatives are getting more attention. Hydroxypropyltrimonium Hydrolyzed Corn Starch Liquid is one of them: a cationic, hydrolyzed corn starch listed for clear gels, foams, sprays, mousses, modeling creams and even shampoos and conditioners.

Product data

Water-soluble liquid. INCI: hydroxypropyltrimonium hydrolyzed corn starch. Applications from the card: transparent gels, styling foams and sprays, mousses, styling resins and bases, modeling creams, fondants, shampoos and conditioners. Add directly to the water phase.

How cationic starch works

Hair carries a slight negative charge, especially when damaged. Cationic ingredients carry a positive charge and are attracted to the hair surface, where they form a thin film. Depending on the level and formula, that film gives hold, body or conditioning.

Product formats

Clear styling gel

A transparent gel with flexible hold.

Mousse

A foam for volume at the roots.

Styling spray

A light spray for texture and hold.

Modeling cream

A creamy product for definition.

Conditioner

A rinse-off product that adds body.

Formulating guidance

Add it to the water phase. In clear gels, combine with a compatible thickener and check clarity. Pair it with Polyquaternium-11 for stronger hold, D-Panthenol for moisture and hydrolyzed keratin for a care story. More hair ingredients are listed under actives.

Compatibility

Cationic ingredients can interact with anionic thickeners such as carbomer, causing haze or loss of viscosity. Choose cellulose-based or other nonionic thickeners for clear gels.

Claims

Use cosmetic wording such as flexible hold, volume, definition and soft-feeling hair. Support with humidity hold tests and panel assessments.

Who the products are for

Brands with natural or plant-based positioning, curly-hair lines that need definition without crunch, and salon brands.

Testing

Run stability at room temperature and 40 °C, checking clarity, viscosity and pH. Test hold on hair tresses at high humidity.

Packaging

Jars and tubes for gels and creams, foam dispensers for mousses, pump sprays for styling sprays.

Batch quality

Keep the CoA for each lot and store retained samples.

Range planning

A gel, a mousse and a cream form a plant-based styling trio.

Sensory design

Check flaking after drying, stiffness and how easily the product brushes out.

Original recipe: clear plant-based styling gel, 100 g

Purified water 87.20 g, Hydroxypropyltrimonium Hydrolyzed Corn Starch Liquid 5.00 g as an example level per CoA, hydroxyethylcellulose 1.80 g, glycerin 2.00 g, propanediol 2.00 g, panthenol 0.50 g, PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil 0.30 g, fragrance 0.20 g, preservative 1.00 g. Disperse cellulose in the glycols, add water and hydrate. Add the active, panthenol, the premixed fragrance and solubilizer and the preservative. Adjust pH to about 5.5 if needed.

Curly and textured hair

Curly hair needs definition without crunch. A modeling cream or gel with a cationic starch can group curls and give soft hold that releases with a touch. Test on several curl patterns and in high humidity, which is when curls lose shape most.

Natural positioning

Plant-derived polymers suit brands with a natural or vegan story. Keep claims factual and based on the documented INCI and origin.

Shampoo and conditioner use

In rinse-off products, the starch adds body and softness. Check viscosity and foam after addition, since cationic ingredients can shift both.

Men's grooming

A matte modeling cream for short hair is a strong format for men's lines.

Storage

Keep the container closed in a cool place away from light.
