Description

Arbutin at a glance

This Arbutin is a fine crystalline brightening powder from France, declared on the label as Alpha-Arbutin. It is white and odorless, dissolves in warm water at about 1 part in 10 and works between pH 3.5 and 6.5. What sets this listing apart is the supplier's detailed dose table by product type, which makes it easy to plan a whole brightening and care line, from face creams to foot creams.

Brightening with arbutin

Arbutin occurs naturally in the leaves of bearberry and other plants. The alpha form used here is the one preferred in modern skin care. It interacts with the pigment production of the skin and helps reduce the look of dark spots over time. Products with arbutin give a brighter, more even and more radiant looking complexion. It is gentle and well tolerated, which makes it suitable for daily use.

The supplier's dose table

The general range is 0.2 to 1.5%, with up to 2% in active serums and masks. The supplier also gives specific levels:

Brightening face creams use 1%. Hand creams for the look of age spots use 1.5%, and body creams 1.25%. Antioxidant firming gels use 0.75 to 1.25%. Softening foot creams use 2%, where arbutin helps rough, darker areas on the heels look more even. Brightening masks and serums use 1 to 1.5%, and cleansing products 2%.

How to formulate

Dissolving

Arbutin dissolves best in warm water, about 1 part in 10. Take part of the formula water, warm it slightly to about 40 °C, dissolve the powder and add the solution to the batch. In an emulsion, add the solution at cool-down.

pH and stability

Keep the finished product between pH 3.5 and 6.5, ideally around 5 to 6. Avoid long heating at very low pH, which can break the molecule.

Partners

Arbutin works well with other tone evening actives. A day cream can add niacinamide, and a foot or hand cream can add urea for softening. More brightening actives are listed in the cosmetic actives section.

Product ideas

Brightening day creams, spot serums, hand creams, body creams for an even tone, softening foot creams, antioxidant firming gels, brightening masks and gentle cleansers are the uses the supplier describes.

Sample recipe: brightening hand cream, 100 g

Distilled water 70.50 g, glycerin 5.00 g, glyceryl stearate and PEG-100 stearate 5.00 g, cetearyl alcohol 3.00 g, shea butter 5.00 g, caprylic/capric triglyceride 6.00 g, dimethicone 1.00 g, xanthan gum 0.30 g, Arbutin 1.50 g, panthenol 1.00 g, preservative 1.00 g, fragrance 0.20 g, citric acid solution 0.50 g. Heat water and oil phases to 75 °C, emulsify and cool, dissolve the arbutin in a little warm water and add it at 40 °C with panthenol, preservative and fragrance, and adjust to about pH 5.5.

Handling the powder

The supplier notes that the powder may cake slightly in storage, which does not affect its properties. Break up the lumps before weighing, and keep the pack tightly closed to limit contact with humid air.

Planning a brightening line

The detailed dose table makes it easy to build a coordinated range. A face cream at 1%, a serum at 1.5%, a hand cream at 1.5%, a body cream at 1.25% and a foot cream at 2% can share the same base technology while each product gets the level that suits its area. A shared label story, arbutin for an even tone, ties the range together.

Testing

Tone evening takes time. Plan photo or colorimeter tests over eight to twelve weeks and include a self assessment questionnaire to capture how users see the change.

Storage

Store in a dry, cool place in a closed pack. A certificate of analysis comes with every lot.
