Description

Alpha-Arbutin at a glance

Alpha-Arbutin is a crystalline brightening powder, chemically 4-hydroxyphenyl alpha-D-glucopyranoside. Its INCI is Alpha-Arbutin. The powder is white and odorless, dissolves in both warm and cold water and works in a pH range of 3.5 to 6.6. It is made in the USA and is used at 0.2 to 2% of the finished product. It has become one of the standard brightening ingredients in skin care, valued by formulators for its simple handling and by consumers for its gentle profile.

How it works

Skin color comes from melanin, a pigment made by special cells in the skin with the help of the enzyme tyrosinase. Alpha-arbutin is a sugar bound form of hydroquinone that interacts with this process and helps reduce the formation of new pigment. In cosmetic terms, products with alpha-arbutin make the complexion look brighter and more even and dark spots look lighter and smaller over time. The alpha form is the one most used in modern brightening care.

Why formulators like it

Alpha-arbutin is a white, odorless powder that dissolves easily, without heating, in cold or warm water. It does not color the product and does not add any smell. It is stable in the usual pH range of skin care and combines with almost every other brightener. This makes it one of the easiest actives to add to an existing cream or serum.

Dosing

The range is 0.2 to 2%. Daily creams for a radiant, even look work well at 0.5 to 1%. Spot correcting serums and intensive brightening products use 1 to 2%. Higher levels do not add benefit and are not recommended.

How to formulate

Dissolving

Weigh the powder into the water phase and stir until clear. It dissolves in cold water, so it can go into a cold process gel or toner. In an emulsion, add it to the water phase or dissolve it in a little water and add it at cool-down.

pH

Keep the finished product between pH 3.5 and 6.6, ideally at about 5 to 6. Very low pH combined with heat can break the molecule apart, so avoid strongly acidic peels as a vehicle.

Partners

Brightening routines combine several actives for the best result. Niacinamide is the classic partner, and a vitamin C derivative such as magnesium ascorbyl phosphate adds antioxidant brightening. More tone evening actives are listed in the cosmetic actives section.

Product ideas

Brightening serums, spot correcting serums, tone evening day and night creams, toners, sheet masks, eye creams for the look of dark circles, hand creams for the look of age spots and body lotions for an even tone are the main uses.

Sample recipe: alpha-arbutin brightening serum, 100 g

Distilled water 85.10 g, Alpha-Arbutin 2.00 g, niacinamide 4.00 g, glycerin 3.00 g, propanediol 3.00 g, hydroxyethylcellulose 0.70 g, panthenol 1.00 g, preservative 1.00 g, citric acid solution 0.20 g. Dissolve alpha-arbutin and niacinamide in the water, disperse the cellulose, add glycerin, propanediol and panthenol, then the preservative, and adjust to about pH 5.5.

Claims and after-sun care

Use brightening and tone evening language: a brighter, more radiant, more even looking complexion and dark spots that look lighter. Results build over several weeks of regular use. Advise daily, because sun exposure makes spots look darker and undoes progress.

Testing

Tone claims are best supported with standard photos, colorimeter readings or spot imaging before and after eight to twelve weeks. Brightening works slowly, so plan the test long enough to show a clear difference, and keep the claims visual.

Storage

Store in a dry, cool room in a tightly closed container, protected from light. A certificate of analysis comes with every lot.
