Description
Zinc Oxide Pharma at a glance
Zinc Oxide Pharma is a powder with a density of 5.7 g per cubic centimeter. The supplier specification notes that it dissolves in acids and alkalis but is insoluble in water. The supplier CoA documents the grade, purity and particle size of each lot.
Why density matters
At 5.7 g per cubic centimeter, zinc oxide is a heavy powder. In thin lotions it tends to settle to the bottom over time. Good thickening, a well-structured emulsion and a dispersing agent all help keep it suspended. Thicker pastes and balms hold it more easily.
Acids and alkalis
Because zinc oxide reacts with acids, avoid combining it with strongly acidic ingredients like fruit acids at low pH. The product may lose its white color, thicken or change pH. Keep formulas with zinc oxide near neutral and check pH stability over time.
Product formats
Pastes
Thick protective pastes for areas that need a barrier.
Creams
Matte creams for oily skin.
Masks
Clay masks with zinc oxide for an oil-absorbing effect.
Oily-skin care
Mattifying fluids and powders.
Processing
Disperse zinc oxide into the oil phase with a dispersant or into a glycerin premix, using a homogenizer. Add it before emulsification for the most even distribution. Check the dispersion for lumps.
Good partners
Zinc oxide (Aroma-Zone) is a layered grade. IO Texturizing Starch Powder improves the feel of matte creams, and Bisabolol suits sensitive skin products. Browse more in the actives catalog.
Testing
Check settling, viscosity and pH over time. After-sun care products need formal UVA testing by an accredited laboratory.
Claims
Matte finish; skin looks less shiny; protective layer on the skin.
Characteristics
Form: powder. Density: 5.7 g per cubic centimeter. Solubility: in acids and alkalis, insoluble in water. Grade: supplier CoA.
Original recipe: mattifying clay mask, 100 g
Distilled water 59.00 g, kaolin 20.00 g, zinc oxide pharma 5.00 g, glycerin 8.00 g, bentonite 3.00 g, xanthan gum 0.50 g, niacinamide 2.00 g, phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin 1.00 g, panthenol 1.50 g. Disperse xanthan in glycerin, add to water, mix in the clays and zinc oxide with a homogenizer, then add niacinamide, panthenol and the preservative.
Mineral after-sun care basics
Formulating mineral after-sun care is demanding. The particles must be very evenly dispersed to give consistent protection, and the finished product must pass UVA tests.
Keeping the feel light
Heavy powders can make creams feel draggy. Use light esters, a small amount of a powder like silica and a well-chosen emulsifier.
Range ideas
A mattifying mask, a matte day cream and a protective paste can share zinc oxide.
Lot records
Keep each CoA with the batch file and note the lot used.
Handling and hygiene
This heavy, fine powder should be weighed slowly to keep dust down. Wear a mask and gloves for larger amounts and clean scales and benches carefully afterwards. Sieve the powder before use if it has formed soft lumps during storage, which makes the dispersion step faster and more reliable.
Documentation
For pharma grades, the supplier usually provides detailed specifications on heavy metals, purity and particle size. Keep these documents ready for the safety assessor and for customers who ask about ingredient quality.
Storage
Store closed in a dry place. Close the container after use.
