Description
Superoxide Dismutase at a glance
Superoxide Dismutase Powder is a powder that dissolves in warm water. Superoxide dismutase, often shortened to SOD, is an enzyme found in nearly all living cells. Its job is to turn superoxide, one of the most common free radicals, into less reactive molecules. The supplier specification describes SOD as a strong antioxidant that helps protect skin from the visible effects of UV light, dust and dirt, soothes the skin, supports the integrity of keratin and suits sun-exposed skin and appearance-focused cosmetic care. Confirm activity and source on the supplier CoA.
Enzymes as antioxidants
Most cosmetic antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, neutralize one free radical and are then used up. Enzymes like SOD act as catalysts: one enzyme molecule can deal with many radicals. That makes SOD an attractive ingredient for premium antioxidant care, especially in products for skin that spends a lot of time outdoors.
Product formats
Day creams with an antioxidant story
Protective day creams for city and outdoor life are the main format.
After-sun care
Lotions and gels for skin after sun exposure are a natural fit.
appearance-focused cosmetic serums
Serums with an antioxidant package for mature skin.
Hair care
The supplier specification mentions keratin, so leave-in products for sun-exposed hair can carry it too.
Processing
Dissolve the powder in a small amount of warm water, not hot, and add it to the formula during cool-down below 40 °C. Avoid strong acids, high alcohol content and harsh preservatives that can reduce enzyme activity. Keep the final pH near neutral unless the supplier states otherwise.
Good partners
IO Antioxidant Active Powder adds an oil-soluble antioxidant, and IO Brightening Antioxidant Active Liquid a vitamin C angle. Hydroxyectoin supports a protective story. Browse more in the actives catalog.
Testing
Enzyme activity can be measured in the finished product with a lab assay, which is the best way to confirm stability. Store samples at 40 °C and check activity after several weeks.
Claims
Antioxidant care; helps protect skin from the visible effects of sun and pollution; skin feels comfortable.
Characteristics
Form: powder. Solubility: in warm water. Type: antioxidant enzyme. Card uses: antioxidant care, skin exposed to sun, dust and dirt, comfort, keratin integrity, appearance-focused cosmetic. Activity and source: supplier CoA.
Original recipe: antioxidant after-sun gel, 100 g
Distilled water 85.00 g, aloe vera juice 5.00 g, glycerin 4.00 g, superoxide dismutase 0.30 g, hydroxyethylcellulose 1.00 g, panthenol 2.00 g, allantoin 0.20 g, sodium benzoate 0.50 g, potassium sorbate 0.10 g, sodium citrate 0.40 g, bisabolol 0.20 g, polysorbate 20 1.30 g. Disperse the cellulose in water, add aloe, glycerin and panthenol, cool, add SOD dissolved in a little warm water and the remaining ingredients.
Protecting enzyme activity
Enzymes are proteins and lose activity when heated, frozen repeatedly or exposed to strong solvents. Keep production temperatures low after adding SOD, store the raw material cool and dry, and choose airless packaging for the finished product.
Range ideas
A protective day cream, an after-sun gel and an antioxidant serum can share SOD as the hero of an outdoor care line.
Lot records
Keep each CoA with the batch file and note the lot used.
Outdoor and sport ranges
People who spend long hours outdoors, such as runners, cyclists and gardeners, are a good audience for antioxidant care. Pair it with an after-sun gel for the evening.
Source and activity
SOD can be made from different sources, including plants, yeast and marine organisms. The CoA states the activity in units per gram, which is the best way to compare lots.
Storage
Store closed in a cool, dry place. Close the container after use.
