Description
Long before synthetic surfactants, people washed with plants. Saponaria, quillaja bark, yucca and Sapindus nuts all contain saponins, natural compounds that foam in water. Saponin Complex BG30 is a water-soluble plant-based ingredient that brings this tradition into modern natural cleansers.
Product data
Water-soluble. The exact INCI, plant source, saponin content and recommended level are confirmed on the supplier CoA for each lot. BG in the name often refers to a butylene glycol carrier.
How saponins foam
Saponins have a water-loving sugar part and a fat-loving part, like surfactants. In water, they form a light foam and help lift oils. Their foam is usually gentler and less abundant than that of synthetic surfactants, so they are often combined with mild surfactants for a satisfying lather.
Product formats
Natural shampoo
A low-sulfate shampoo with a botanical story.
Face wash
A gentle foaming cleanser.
Body wash
A natural shower gel.
Cleansing foam
A pump foam for the face.
Formulating guidance
Add the complex to the water phase or to the surfactant blend. Pair it with mild surfactants such as glucosides, Polyquaternium-10 for after-feel, D-Panthenol for comfort and aloe vera gel for a natural story. More ingredients are listed under actives.
Claims
Use cosmetic wording such as gentle cleansing, plant-based foam and soft-feeling skin. Support mildness claims with tests on the finished product.
Who the products are for
Natural and clean brands and customers who want gentle, plant-based cleansers.
Foam testing
Compare foam with and without the complex using a shake or hand-lather test. Record volume, bubble size and rinse feel.
Eye contact
Saponins can sting if they reach the eyes. Test face washes and shampoos carefully and add a usage note.
Odor and color
Plant saponins can add color and an earthy scent. Adjust fragrance and check under light.
Testing
Run stability at room temperature and 40 °C, checking viscosity, pH, foam and odor.
Packaging
Foam pumps for cleansing foams, bottles for shampoos and washes.
Batch quality
Keep the CoA for each lot and store retained samples.
Range planning
A shampoo, a face wash and a body wash form a natural cleansing line.
Preservation
Plant extracts can challenge preservatives. Confirm with a challenge test.
Labeling
Use the INCI from the CoA, including the carrier, on the label.
Original recipe: natural cleansing foam, 100 g
Purified water 78.00 g, coco glucoside 8.00 g, sodium cocoyl glutamate solution 5.00 g, Saponin Complex BG30 4.00 g as an example level per CoA, glycerin 2.00 g, panthenol 0.50 g, aloe vera juice 1.00 g, preservative 0.80 g, citric acid solution 0.70 g. Mix all ingredients into water, adjust pH to about 5.5 and fill into a foam pump.
History of plant cleansing
Saponin-rich plants were used for washing textiles and skin in many cultures, from Saponaria in Europe to quillaja in South America and Sapindus in India. That heritage gives natural brands a credible story, as long as performance claims are tested.
Combining with mild surfactants
For a satisfying lather, combine the complex with glucosides or amino acid surfactants. The saponins add a botanical identity and a soft, creamy feel to the foam.
Children's products
Because saponins can sting in the eyes, test children's products carefully and keep levels moderate.
Sensory design
Saponin foam is creamy and fine. Customers who like natural products often prefer it to big, airy bubbles.
Record the lot number in your batch log so every production run can be traced back to its certificate of analysis. Retain a small sample of each lot for at least the shelf life of the finished product, since it makes later quality questions much easier to answer.
Storage
Keep the container closed in a cool place.
