Description

Menthol Crystals at a glance

Menthol Crystals are clear, colorless, needle-like crystals with a peppermint odor. The supplier specification states that they are practically insoluble in water and glycerin, dissolve in alcohol and essential oils and dissolve in slightly warmed oils, melting near 42 °C. Menthol is the key cooling compound of peppermint and corn mint oils. Confirm purity and source on the supplier CoA.

How menthol cools

Menthol does not lower skin temperature. Instead, it activates the same nerve receptors that respond to cold, so the brain perceives a cool, fresh sensation. That makes menthol a powerful sensory ingredient: a small amount gives a strong, immediate effect that users notice right away.

Processing

Dissolve the crystals in ethanol, in essential oils or in oils warmed slightly above 42 °C. Add the solution to the formula at cool-down. In water-based gels, use alcohol or a solubilizer to keep menthol dissolved. Menthol is volatile and evaporates with heat, so keep the container closed and avoid long heating.

Good partners

Menthyl lactate adds a longer, gentler cooling effect. Caffeine and Sophora Japonica Rutin suit leg gels. Browse more in the actives catalog.

Testing

A panel can rate cooling intensity and comfort. Check for crystals at low temperature and for loss of menthol odor over time.

Claims

Instant cooling sensation; refreshing, invigorating feel.

Characteristics

Appearance: clear, colorless, needle-like crystals with a peppermint odor. Solubility: practically insoluble in water and glycerin; soluble in alcohol and essential oils; dissolves in slightly warmed oils. Melting point: near 42 °C. Grade and source: supplier CoA.

Original recipe: cooling neck and shoulder balm, 100 g

Sunflower oil 45.00 g, beeswax 20.00 g, shea butter 20.00 g, coconut oil 8.80 g, menthol crystals 3.00 g, camphor 1.00 g, peppermint oil 1.20 g, tocopherol 1.00 g. Melt the waxes and butters with the oils, cool to about 50 °C, dissolve the menthol and camphor, add peppermint oil and tocopherol, and pour into tins.

Safety and comfort

Menthol is strong. High levels can feel burning rather than cool, and it should be kept away from the eyes and from products for young children. Use clear directions and warnings, and test the level on several people.

Volatility and packaging

Menthol evaporates slowly from open products. Use well-sealed jars and tins, and store the raw material in a cool place.

Range ideas

A cooling balm, a foot gel and a scalp tonic can share menthol for an invigorating range.

Lot records

Keep each CoA with the batch file and note the lot used.

Natural versus synthetic menthol

Menthol can be extracted from mint oils or produced synthetically. Both forms give the same cooling effect. Natural menthol suits natural ranges, while synthetic menthol offers consistent supply. Check the source on the CoA and label it accordingly.

Scalp care

A cool tingle on the scalp feels refreshing after washing. Add a small amount of menthol to shampoos and tonics, dissolved in alcohol or a solubilizer.

Dosing in small batches

Because menthol is so strong, weigh it carefully on a precise scale, especially in small lab batches where a small error makes a big difference.

Storage

Store closed in a cool place away from light. Close the container after use.
