Description
Texture often decides whether a product is used every day or left in a drawer. Hemisqualane belongs to the group of ingredients formulators reach for when they want a product to feel almost weightless: it spreads quickly, absorbs fast and leaves a silky rather than oily surface. On the market it is presented as a shorter relative of squalane and as an option for brands that prefer to avoid volatile silicones.
What it is and how it feels
Hemisqualane is a clear, light liquid emollient. Compared with squalane, which already feels light, it is thinner and gives an even quicker dry-down. That makes it useful in facial serums that layer under makeup, in hair products that should not weigh hair down and in lip products that need slip without stickiness. Our product page uses a generic template in the solubility field, so confirm the solubility and INCI for your lot on the supplier CoA. In practice, emollients of this type belong to the oil phase.
Applications from the supplier specification
The supplier specification lists moisturizers, serums, lotions, hair masks, lip balms and makeup removers. Each benefits from a different property.
Face care
In moisturizers and serums it lowers the drag of heavier oils and butters, so a rich cream spreads easily and settles to a soft finish. It also makes an oil serum feel less greasy.
Hair
In hair masks and leave-in oils it adds shine and slip. On fine hair it can replace part of a heavier oil, giving smoothness without flat roots.
Lips and makeup removal
Lip balms gain glide, while cleansing oils and biphasic removers benefit from its ability to dissolve makeup and rinse or wipe away cleanly.
Formulating notes
Add hemisqualane to the oil phase. It can be heated with the oil phase or added at cool-down in cold-process serums. Combine it with heavier oils such as cosmetic jojoba oil or squalane oil to tune the sensory profile. Because it is very light, it can make an emulsion feel thinner, so check viscosity and adjust the thickener. Add an antioxidant such as tocopherol when the oil phase contains unsaturated oils. You can find related ingredients in our actives catalog.
Sensory testing
Compare formulas side by side on the inner forearm: spreading time, gloss after one minute, tack after five minutes and the residual feel. Small changes in emollient ratio are easy to feel, so keep notes for each trial. A panel of five to ten people gives a reliable first read before scaling up.
Why brands choose it
Lightweight emollients solve a common brief: a product must feel rich enough to be comforting yet disappear quickly so the customer can apply makeup or get dressed. Hemisqualane helps achieve that balance. It is also a useful tool for reformulation projects in which a brand wants to remove volatile silicones while keeping the same fast, dry feel. In that case, start by replacing the silicone one to one, then adjust thickeners and other emollients until the sensory profile matches the original.
For lip products, a small amount added to a balm makes application smoother on cold days when waxes feel stiff. In makeup removers it speeds up the breakdown of long-wear mascara and foundation, so less rubbing is needed around the eyes.
Original recipe: weightless facial oil serum, 100 g
Hemisqualane 40.00 g, squalane 25.00 g, caprylic/capric triglyceride 20.00 g, jojoba oil 10.00 g, rosehip seed oil 4.00 g, tocopherol 0.50 g, bisabolol 0.30 g, fragrance-free oil-soluble botanical extract 0.20 g. Combine all ingredients at room temperature in a clean beaker, stir until uniform and fill into amber dropper bottles. No water phase means no preservative is needed, but use clean, dry equipment.
Storage
Store tightly closed in a cool place, away from heat and direct sunlight. Keep bottles upright and minimize headspace for long storage.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is hemisqualane?
A light hydrocarbon emollient related to squalane, used for a silky, fast-absorbing finish in skin, hair and lip products.
Which products is it used in?
Moisturizers, serums, lotions, hair masks, lip balms and makeup removers, according to the supplier specification.
Can it replace light silicones?
It is often chosen as a silicone alternative for slip and a dry-touch finish. Test sensory results in your own base.
Where are the INCI and solubility confirmed?
On the supplier CoA that ships with each lot.
