Elastine Booster is a firming active from France. Its INCI is Calcium 2-Ketogluconate. It is a white crystal powder that dissolves in water and is used at 0.3 to 0.5% of the finished product. What calcium 2-ketogluconate is

The molecule is the calcium salt of 2-ketogluconic acid, a compound derived from glucose. Calcium plays a key part in the life of skin cells, and the sugar based carrier makes it easy to dissolve and to formulate. The low use level is typical for targeted actives.

Cosmetic benefits

According to the supplier, the active supports the skin's own production of hyaluronic acid, which gives a deeply moisturized feel. It also supports elastin, the protein behind the springy, elastic quality of skin. In cosmetic terms, products with Elastine Booster help skin look and feel firmer, denser and more toned, with smoother looking lines.

Formulating

Dissolve the crystals in the water phase. It dissolves at room temperature, so you can also add it as a small water premix at cool-down. Keep the finished product in a skin friendly pH range. Dosing

Use 0.3% in lip balms, light lotions and daily creams. Use 0.5%, the top of the supplier range, in lifting serums, eye area creams, neck creams and intensive firming body lotions.

Sample recipe: lifting serum, 100 g

Distilled water 88.80 g, glycerin 4.00 g, propanediol 3.00 g, sodium hyaluronate 0.40 g, xanthan gum 0.20 g, Elastine Booster 0.50 g, niacinamide 2.00 g, preservative 1.00 g, citric acid solution 0.10 g. Disperse hyaluronate and xanthan in glycerin, add to the water and stir until clear, dissolve Elastine Booster and niacinamide in the gel, add the preservative and adjust to about pH 5.5.

Neck, décolleté and body

The neck and décolleté show signs of aging early because the skin there is thin. A firming cream with Elastine Booster in a light base suits this area. For the body, firming lotions and body contouring products for the arms, thighs and belly are on the supplier list, together with masks and lifting care.

Lip balms

Lip balms are a less obvious use. In balms, add the active through a small water containing emulsion base or a hydrous stick formula, because anhydrous sticks cannot dissolve a water-soluble salt.

Mature skin creams

Creams for mature skin are the first use on the supplier list. Combine Elastine Booster with a nourishing but light emulsion, humectants and antioxidants. A rich night cream and a lighter day cream with the same active build a simple routine.

Masks

Lifting masks can use the active in a cream or gel mask base that stays on the skin for 15 to 20 minutes. Combine it with hyaluronic acid and a film forming polymer for an immediate smooth, toned feel after rinsing.

Claims and testing

Typical cosmetic claims are firmer looking, more elastic and better moisturized skin. Measure firmness and elasticity on volunteers over four to eight weeks of use if you want measured claims on the pack.

Safety notes
