CALMISKIN from peppermint leaves

CALMISKIN is a soothing liquid from the French supplier Silab, made from a selective phenolic fraction of peppermint leaves. The INCI is short: Aqua, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Extract. It is a yellow to amber liquid with a characteristic odor that dissolves in water and in water-alcohol mixtures, and the use level is 1 to 5%. You can start with a 0.33 oz (10 mL) trial pack before moving up to production sizes.

Two practical strengths

Most soothing botanicals have to go in at the very end of a batch. CALMISKIN is heat stable up to 80 °C for 120 minutes, so it can go into the water phase before emulsifying, and the finished product can sit at a pH of up to 8. That freedom makes it easy to drop into existing creams, lotions and toners.

What the skin feels

The supplier describes a cooling, refreshing sensation, less feeling of tightness and burning, skin that looks less red and a soft, radiant surface. Claims should stay on comfort and appearance, such as a cooling, soothing feel and calmer looking skin.

Products that make the most of it

Comfort creams and milks for sensitive skin are the core, with about 3% as a strong everyday level. After-shave balms and after-waxing gels use 3 to 5% to bring out the cooling feel. After-sun lotions and protective creams for skin exposed to cold and wind round out a range. In alcohol toners the extract dissolves well, so check the fragrance balance with its natural peppermint note.
