Description
Alanine at a glance
Alanine is a powder that dissolves easily in water. Alanine is one of the simplest amino acids and, together with serine and glycine, one of the most abundant in the skin's natural moisturizing factor. That makes it a natural choice for complexes that aim to mimic the skin's own hydration system. Confirm purity and grade on the supplier CoA and choose a grade suitable for cosmetics.
Skin-identical hydration
The outer layer of the skin contains a mix of amino acids, PCA, lactate, urea and sugars that hold water. When this mix runs low, skin feels tight and looks dull. Adding skin-identical molecules such as alanine helps rebuild the feeling of comfortable hydration. Because these molecules are small and familiar to the skin, they are well tolerated.
Product formats
Hydrating serums
Clear serums with an amino acid complex and hyaluronic acid.
Toners and essences
Water-thin products that refresh and hydrate.
Creams
Moisturizers with an NMF-inspired water phase.
Hair care
Leave-in sprays for smoother, softer hair.
Processing
Dissolve alanine in the water phase at room temperature before adding thickeners. It has little effect on pH at typical levels, but always measure the final pH. Combine it with other amino acids, sodium PCA and sodium lactate for a balanced complex.
Good partners
L-Leucine and L-Proline complete an amino acid complex, and Polyglutamic acid adds a moisture-holding film. Browse more in the actives catalog.
Testing
Measure skin hydration with a corneometer over several hours. Check that the solution stays clear after storage in the fridge.
Claims
Skin feels hydrated, soft and comfortable; with skin-identical amino acids.
Characteristics
Form: powder. Solubility: water. Type: amino acid abundant in the skin's natural moisturizing factor. Grade: supplier CoA; choose a cosmetic grade.
Original recipe: NMF-style hydrating toner, 100 g
Distilled water 89.90 g, glycerin 3.00 g, butylene glycol 3.00 g, alanine 0.50 g, glycine 0.30 g, sodium PCA 1.00 g, sodium lactate 0.50 g, panthenol 0.50 g, phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin 1.00 g, citric acid 0.30 g. Dissolve the amino acids and salts in water, add the glycols and panthenol, preserve and adjust the pH.
Why a complex works better
A single amino acid helps, but the skin's own system is a blend. Combining several amino acids with PCA and lactate gives a fuller, more balanced effect and a stronger story. Keep the total level moderate so the product does not feel sticky.
In cosmetics, the story is different and should stay about skin feel and hydration. Use the familiar name as a hook, but keep the claims cosmetic. A fitness-inspired body lotion or a post-gym face mist can carry an amino acid complex with alanine as the headline name.
Range ideas
A hydrating toner, an amino acid serum and a light moisturizer can share the same NMF-style complex.
Lot records
Keep each CoA with the batch file and note the lot used.
Body and hair uses
Amino acids are not only for the face. Body lotions with an NMF-style complex help dry legs and arms feel comfortable, and leave-in hair sprays with amino acids help strands feel smoother. One amino acid blend can serve the whole range, from face toner to body lotion and hair mist, which keeps purchasing simple.
Record the lot number in your batch log so every production run can be traced back to its certificate of analysis. Retain a small sample of each lot for at least the shelf life of the finished product, since it makes later quality questions much easier to answer.
Storage
Store closed in a dry place. Close the container after use.
