Description
ABS Apple AHAs in brief
ABS Apple AHAs is a ready made fruit acid complex built around the acid that gives apples their tart taste, malic acid. The blend adds glycolic, lactic and citric acids and apple fruit extract, carried in water and propylene glycol. The INCI is Water, Propylene Glycol, Malic Acid, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract, Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Citric Acid. It is an amber liquid that dissolves in water, works across a pH range of 2.0 to 7.0 and is used at 1 to 10% of the finished product. One material gives a formulator a full AHA profile with a friendly fruit story.
How fruit acids work
Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds between dead cells on the skin surface so they shed more evenly. The result is skin that looks smoother, brighter and fresher, with a more refined texture. Each acid has its own character. Glycolic acid is the smallest and most active. Lactic acid is gentler and also binds water. Malic and citric acids are larger, act more softly and support the pH of the blend. A mix of acids gives a balanced, comfortable exfoliation rather than the sharp effect of a single high dose acid.
Dose and pH
The use level runs from 1 to 10%. Low levels around 1 to 3% suit daily toners, creams and hair products. Levels of 5 to 10% suit renewing serums, night creams and rinse-off masks. The pH decides the strength as much as the dose. The lower the pH, the more free acid is available and the stronger the effect. Daily leave-on products usually sit at pH 3.5 to 4.5. Products at a higher pH, from 5 to 7, keep the fruit extract and humectant benefits with a milder exfoliating action. Follow the dose and keep the product purpose in mind, as the supplier advises.
Formulating tips
Stability of the base
Acids lower the pH and can affect thickeners and emulsifiers. Choose acid tolerant thickeners such as hydroxyethylcellulose, xanthan gum or acrylate polymers designed for low pH, and nonionic emulsifiers. Add the acid complex near the end of the process and then set the final pH with a base such as sodium hydroxide or arginine.
Comfort
Add soothing and moisturizing ingredients to balance the acids. Allantoin and panthenol are classic partners that keep a renewing product comfortable. More exfoliating and renewing actives are listed in the cosmetic actives section.
Hair care uses
The supplier lists hair care as a main area. In shampoos and conditioners, a small level of fruit acids lowers the pH and helps close the hair cuticle, which gives more shine and a smoother feel. The blend also suits split end products, moisturizing conditioners and scalp exfoliating products that remove buildup.
Sample recipe: apple AHA renewing toner, 100 g
Distilled water 84.30 g, ABS Apple AHAs 8.00 g, glycerin 3.00 g, panthenol 1.00 g, allantoin 0.20 g, propanediol 2.00 g, preservative 1.00 g, sodium hydroxide solution 0.50 g. Dissolve allantoin in warm water, cool, add glycerin, propanediol, panthenol and the acid complex, add the preservative and adjust the pH to about 3.8 to 4.0 with sodium hydroxide.
Safe use
Exfoliating acids increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun. Start new users with a low dose product.
Labeling the blend
The seven INCI parts of the complex merge with the rest of the formula on the label. Water and propylene glycol usually sit near the top, while the acids and apple extract appear further down at typical doses. Brands can describe the complex as apple fruit acids in marketing text, which is a friendly and accurate name For formulators building consumer-facing cosmetics.
Storage
Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place. A certificate of analysis comes with every lot.
