Description
This ingredient at a glance
IO SPF Booster Oil Liquid is a liquid complex for sun care products that dissolves in oils and other lipids. The card lists sunscreen cosmetics, lotions, creams, serums and balms as typical uses, and the supplier CoA confirms the INCI and the recommended level for each lot.
How boosters fit into sun care
Sun care development starts with UV filters chosen for the target protection level. Booster ingredients are added on top of that base to help the filters work more efficiently or to improve how evenly they spread on the skin. The important rule is simple: the protection level on the pack must come from testing the finished product. A booster is part of the formula design, not a shortcut around testing.
Product formats
Sun lotions and creams
Most sun products are emulsions. This ingredient goes into the oil phase with the oil-soluble filters, emollients and waxes. Heat the oil phase as usual for a hot process, then emulsify and cool.
Serums and daily fluids
Light daily fluids with sun protection are popular for city use. In a fluid with a small oil phase, the booster still belongs with the lipids. Choose fast-spreading esters so the texture stays light.
Balms and sticks
Anhydrous balms and sticks for lips, cheeks and the nose are easy carriers for an oil-soluble complex. Blend this ingredient with the melted waxes and oils before pouring.
Processing
Weigh the booster into the oil phase and stir until the lipids are uniform. Keep heating moderate and as short as the process allows. The card does not state a level, so use the range on the CoA. Measure the protection level and water resistance of the finished product through accredited testing before you print any claim.
Partners
UV filters, plant oils, squalane and esters form the core of the oil phase. Tocopherol helps protect the oils from oxidation. A plant-based companion for the same oil phase is Vegetable SPF Booster, and Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane is a common UVA filter in sun creams. Other oil-phase ingredients sit in our actives catalog.
Stability and labeling
Sun products are used in heat and light, so stability testing should include a warm cabinet and a light exposure check. Watch for changes in color, odor and texture, and for any crystals forming from solid filters. Keep the CoA of each lot of this ingredient with the batch record, and copy the full INCI from it into the label file. Claims on the pack should be limited to what testing of the finished product supports.
Characteristics
Form: liquid. Solubility: oils and other lipids. Listed uses: sunscreen cosmetics, lotions, creams, serums, balms. INCI and level: supplier CoA. Addition point: oil phase.
Original recipe: sun balm base for testing, 100 g
Caprylic/capric triglyceride 35.00 g, shea butter 20.00 g, beeswax 12.00 g, sunflower seed oil 20.00 g, IO SPF Booster Oil Liquid 5.00 g, zinc oxide dispersion 7.00 g, tocopherol 1.00 g. Melt waxes and butter with the oils at 75 °C, add the booster and dispersion while cooling, pour into tins and send samples for SPF testing.
Working with a test lab
Plan the SPF testing budget at the start of the project. Send the lab a stable, final formula, not a draft, and keep a sample of the exact batch tested. If you change the booster level or any filter afterwards, the result no longer applies.
Record the lot number in your batch log so every production run can be traced back to its certificate of analysis. Retain a small sample of each lot for at least the shelf life of the finished product, since it makes later quality questions much easier to answer.
Storage
Store closed in a cool place away from light. Stir before use if the liquid has been stored for a long time.
