Description
Retinal made easy to formulate
Retinaldehyde, listed on labels as Retinal, is the vitamin A aldehyde that sits one step closer to retinoic acid than retinol in the skin's own conversion chain. As a raw powder it is sensitive to light, air and heat, and it does not dissolve in water. This liquid places it inside nano-sized phospholipid liposomes so the active disperses through a water-based serum and is better shielded during processing.
Composition
The INCI is Aqua, Phospholipids, PEG-20, Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, Retinal. The phospholipids build the vesicle wall, the glycerides form a light lipid core for the retinal and PEG-20 helps the dispersion stay uniform. Lot data appear on the certificate of analysis.
Product ideas
Retinal liquids are chosen for night serums, renewal creams, eye creams and neck care positioned for a smoother, more refined and more even look. Brands that already sell encapsulated retinol often add retinal as a step-up product, while a plant alternative for sensitive lines is bakuchiol. How to work with it
Process
Add the liquid during cool-down below 40 °C with low shear, ideally under yellow or dim light, and fill into opaque, airless packaging. Hold the finished pH roughly between 5 and 6.5 and include an antioxidant such as tocopherol in the oil phase.
Packs and storage
Sold in 50 g, 100 g and 250 g packs (1.76, 3.5 and 8.8 oz). Store tightly closed in the refrigerator, away from light and air.

Aqua, Phospholipids, PEG-20, Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, Retinal.
Is retinal the same as retinol?
No. Retinal is the aldehyde form of vitamin A, one conversion step closer to retinoic acid than retinol.
How should I protect it during production?
Add it below 40 °C with low shear, limit light and air exposure, and use opaque airless packaging.
How should I store it?
Refrigerated, tightly closed and away from light.
