Mangixyl Givaudan is a mango leaf extract powder made in the USA. Its INCI is Mangifera Indica Leaf Extract. It is a light yellow to beige powder that dissolves in plant oils such as sunflower, olive and jojoba, in essential oils such as lavender, chamomile and tea tree, and partly in ethanol and isopropanol. It does not dissolve in water. The supplier gives a broad range of 0.1 to 5%, split into three levels for different product types.

Mango leaves and mangiferin

The mango tree, Mangifera indica, is famous for its fruit, but its leaves have their own long tradition of use in South and Southeast Asia. They are rich in mangiferin, a natural polyphenol that is one of the most studied antioxidants of the plant world. In skin care, mangiferin helps protect against free radicals and daily stress, and it gives the extract its soothing and balancing character.

What it does

The supplier lists four goals: it improves skin texture, helps balance sebum production, helps protect against UV related stress and soothes itching and burning sensations. In product terms, moisturizers gain hydration and appearance-focused cosmetic benefits, serums help skin look smoother with fewer visible wrinkles, masks give a refreshing and soothing effect and gentle cleansers calm and soften stressed skin.

The three dose levels

At 0.1 to 1%, the extract gives light hydration, antioxidant protection and comfort. At 1 to 3%, it gives stronger moisturizing, antioxidant and soothing effects. At 3 to 5%, it is used for the maximum effect in appearance-focused cosmetic, balancing and cleansing products.

How to formulate

Because the powder dissolves in oils, add it to the oil phase. Dissolve it in a plant oil first, for example jojoba or sunflower oil, with gentle warming and stirring, and then add the solution to the oil phase of the emulsion. In face oils and balms, it can be dissolved directly. In toners with alcohol, it partly dissolves, so test clarity. A balancing cream can combine it with squalane, and an antioxidant serum can add vitamin E. More antioxidant actives are listed in the cosmetic actives section.

Sample recipe: mango leaf face oil, 100 g

Jojoba oil 30.00 g, squalane 30.00 g, caprylic/capric triglyceride 26.50 g, sunflower seed oil 10.00 g, Mangixyl Givaudan 2.00 g, vitamin E 1.00 g, fragrance 0.50 g. Warm the sunflower and jojoba oils to about 40 °C, dissolve Mangixyl in them with stirring, add squalane and the triglyceride, then vitamin E and fragrance, and filter if needed.

Cleansing oils and balms

The supplier lists gentle cleansers among the uses. Because Mangixyl is oil-soluble, it fits cleansing oils and balms well. At 1 to 3% it adds an antioxidant, soothing message to a product that removes makeup and leaves the skin soft.

Combination skin

The sebum balancing claim suits combination skin, which is oily in some zones and dry in others. A light cream with Mangixyl helps the T-zone look less shiny while it keeps the cheeks comfortable.

Essential oil blends

The supplier notes solubility in essential oils such as lavender, chamomile and tea tree. This allows aromatic concentrates where Mangixyl is dissolved together with a small amount of essential oil and then added to the oil phase. Keep essential oil levels low in leave-on face care and check skin compatibility.
