Description

This ingredient in brief

IO L-Arginine Powder is a powder that dissolves easily in water, very slightly in ethanol and not in fats and oils. L-arginine is an amino acid, and amino acids are a major part of the skin's natural moisturizing factor. The card lists it as a moisturizing ingredient for shampoos, body and face creams, shower gels and conditioners. The supplier CoA confirms the INCI and level.

Strongly alkaline

The card gives a strongly alkaline pH for the material in solution. That is important: adding L-arginine raises the pH of a formula. Formulators use this property to neutralize acidic thickeners such as carbomer, replacing synthetic bases. In other products, add an acid to bring the pH back to the target.

Product formats

Creams

Face and body creams use L-arginine for moisture. If the formula contains carbomer, it can double as the neutralizer.

Shampoos and conditioners

In hair care, amino acids help hair and scalp feel moisturized.

Shower gels

Shower gels with L-arginine leave skin feeling soft after washing.

Gels

Carbomer gels can be neutralized with L-arginine for an amino-acid story.

Processing

Dissolve the powder in part of the water phase. Add it to the batch and check the pH. If using it to neutralize carbomer, add it slowly while measuring.

Partners

Sodium PCA 50% and Natural Moisturizing Factor build a full moisture system. Glycerin and panthenol suit most formats. Find other options in the actives catalog.

Testing

Measure pH at each step and after stability tests. A panel can rate moisture and softness.

Claims

Use moisture and comfort wording: soft, moisturized, comfortable skin; hair that feels hydrated.

Natural neutralizer

Many natural brands want to avoid synthetic neutralizers. L-arginine offers an amino-acid alternative for carbomer gels and creams. Test the viscosity, since it may differ from gels made with other bases.

Characteristics

Form: powder. Solubility: easily soluble in water, very slightly in ethanol, insoluble in fats and oils. PH in solution: strongly alkaline. Listed uses: moisturizing products, shampoos, body and face creams, shower gels, conditioners. INCI and level: supplier CoA.

Original recipe: amino acid gel cream, 100 g

Distilled water 83.30 g, glycerin 4.00 g, carbomer 0.50 g, IO L-Arginine Powder 0.70 g, caprylic/capric triglyceride 5.00 g, polysorbate 20 1.00 g, panthenol 1.50 g, sodium PCA 50% 2.00 g, preservative 1.00 g, fragrance 1.00 g. Disperse carbomer in water with glycerin, add the oil premixed with polysorbate, neutralize with dissolved L-arginine, then add the rest and check the pH.

Amino acids in skin care

Amino acids make up a large share of the natural moisturizing factor in the outer layer of skin. They help it hold water and stay soft. Adding amino acids such as L-arginine to products is a simple way to support a moisture story. Many brands combine several amino acids for a fuller blend. Explaining the link to the skin's own moisture system helps shoppers understand the benefit.

Shampoo tips

In shampoos, add the dissolved powder after the surfactants and adjust the pH with citric acid. Check viscosity, since pH changes affect thickness.

Gel texture

Carbomer gels neutralized with L-arginine are clear and smooth. Compare clarity and viscosity with a gel neutralized by sodium hydroxide, and pick the one your panel prefers for feel and look.

Record the lot number in your batch log so every production run can be traced back to its certificate of analysis. Retain a small sample of each lot for at least the shelf life of the finished product, since it makes later quality questions much easier to answer.

Storage tip

Amino acid powders can absorb moisture, so keep the container closed and dry between uses.

Storage

Store closed in a dry place. Close the container after use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is L-arginine?

An amino acid and part of the skin's natural moisturizing factor.

Is it water-soluble?

Yes. It dissolves easily in water but not in oils.

Why check the pH?

Its water solution is strongly alkaline, so it raises the pH of a formula.
