Description
Scalp tonics have a long tradition in European hair care. They are usually hydroalcoholic: alcohol gives a fresh feeling, helps them dry quickly and lets them be applied daily without weighing hair down. IO Hair Care Active Liquid is a liquid hair care active whose solubility profile fits these products very well.
Solubility in detail
The product card gives an unusually complete list: ethanol, hydroalcoholic solutions above 45 degrees, glycerin, propylene glycol and butylene glycol. It adds that although the manufacturer does not specify it, the active also dissolves normally in water. The working pH range is 4.5 to 7.5, and the card explicitly asks formulators to verify the pH of the finished product. The INCI, active content and recommended level are confirmed on the supplier CoA for each lot.
Product formats
Hydroalcoholic scalp tonic
The classic format. A tonic with ethanol, water, a glycol and the active is applied to the scalp after washing or daily.
Scalp lotion and serum
Lower-alcohol or alcohol-free lotions for sensitive scalps, using glycols and water as solvents.
Shampoos and conditioners
Rinse-off products that support the range story. Combine them with a leave-on tonic for a complete routine.
Formulating guidance
Dissolve the active in the alcohol or glycol part of the formula, or in water, according to your base. Keep the finished pH within 4.5 to 7.5 and measure it every time, as the card advises. In hydroalcoholic tonics, add water-soluble ingredients to the water before combining with alcohol to avoid precipitation. A cooling agent improves the sensory experience. Partner ingredients with a recognized hair-care profile include Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3 + Red Clover Extract Hair Complex and D-Panthenol. The full range of liquid hair actives is in actives.
Claims
Keep hair claims cosmetic: a healthy-looking scalp, stronger-looking, fuller-looking hair, less breakage when brushing. Base them on testing of the finished product and avoid growth language.
Sensory design
Scalp tonics are used often, so the experience matters. A light, fresh fragrance, a quick-drying formula and an applicator nozzle that reaches the scalp through the hair all encourage regular use. Avoid oily residues that make roots look flat.
Safety and comfort
High alcohol levels can feel drying for some users. Offer an alcohol-reduced version or add a humectant such as glycerin to balance the feel. Advise users to avoid contact with eyes.
Range ideas
A men's grooming line with a daily tonic and a fortifying shampoo is a natural concept. A women's line can add a lightweight leave-in serum for the lengths. Keeping the active consistent across products builds recognition.
Quality notes
Record the lot number from each CoA and check the appearance and odor of each delivery. In clear tonics, a small test batch confirms that the active stays clear in your exact ethanol to water ratio before scaling.
Original recipe: daily scalp tonic, 100 g
Purified water 51.80 g, ethanol 40.00 g, propylene glycol 3.00 g, IO Hair Care Active Liquid 3.00 g as an example level per CoA, panthenol 1.00 g, menthyl lactate 0.30 g, glycerin 0.50 g, fragrance 0.20 g, citric acid solution 0.20 g. Dissolve panthenol and glycerin in water. Dissolve the active, menthyl lactate and fragrance in the ethanol and propylene glycol. Combine slowly with stirring, check clarity and adjust pH to 5.5. The alcohol content provides self-preservation; confirm with a challenge test.
Record the lot number in your batch log so every production run can be traced back to its certificate of analysis. Retain a small sample of each lot for at least the shelf life of the finished product, since it makes later quality questions much easier to answer.
Storage
Keep tightly closed in a cool place away from light and sources of ignition. Reseal after use.
