Description
DMAE Complex at a glance
DMAE Complex is a powder that dissolves in water. The supplier specification gives a pH range of 3.4 to 4.4 and lists a wide range of formats: gels, emulsions, balms, serums, fluids, appearance-focused cosmetic cosmetics, soufflés and milks. DMAE stands for dimethylaminoethanol, a small molecule closely related to choline. In skin care it is known for a firming-look and smoothing story. Take the use level from the supplier documentation for your lot.
Reading the pH range
A pH of 3.4 to 4.4 is fairly acidic. It likely reflects the solution pH of the complex itself, which suggests DMAE is supplied as a salt with an acid. When you add it to a formula, check the final pH and adjust it to suit the other ingredients and the skin. Many appearance-focused cosmetic products are made between pH 5 and 6.
Product formats
Serums and fluids
Light serums and fluids for a firm, smooth look.
Gels
Clear gels for face and neck.
Emulsions and milks
Creams and light milks for mature skin.
Balms and soufflés
The supplier specification lists balms and soufflés, airy whipped creams with a light texture.
Processing
Dissolve the powder in the water phase at room temperature. Check the pH after adding it and adjust as needed. If the formula uses an electrolyte-sensitive thickener, check viscosity, since salts can thin some gels.
Good partners
DMAE 37% bitartrate is another DMAE grade. Peptides and IO Hydration Serum Active Liquid support the firming-look story. Browse more in the actives catalog.
Testing
Measure firmness with a cutometer and ask a panel to rate smoothness over several weeks. Check pH and viscosity over time.
Claims
Skin looks firmer and smoother; toned-looking complexion.
Characteristics
Form: powder. Solubility: water. PH range in the supplier specification: 3.4 to 4.4. Listed uses: gels, emulsions, balms, serums, fluids, appearance-focused cosmetic cosmetics, soufflés, milks. INCI, DMAE content and level: supplier data sheet and CoA.
Original recipe: firming soufflé cream, 100 g
Distilled water 70.80 g, glycerin 4.00 g, DMAE Complex 2.00 g, xanthan gum 0.20 g, glyceryl stearate citrate 4.00 g, cetearyl alcohol 3.00 g, shea butter 4.00 g, caprylic capric triglyceride 8.00 g, panthenol 1.00 g, phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin 1.00 g, sodium hydroxide solution 2.00 g. Emulsify the heated phases, cool, add DMAE Complex and panthenol, adjust the pH, then whip gently for a light soufflé texture.
Soufflé textures
A soufflé is a cream whipped to hold tiny air bubbles, which makes it light and fluffy. Use a higher level of fatty alcohol and butter to give the cream enough body to hold air, and whip at cool-down. Package it in a jar to show off the texture. A wide, shallow jar lets users scoop the airy cream easily.
Range ideas
A firming serum, a soufflé cream and a neck gel can share DMAE Complex and a toned-skin story.
Lot records
Keep each CoA with the batch file and note the lot used.
Formulating at a low starting pH
When an ingredient brings a low pH into the formula, check how it interacts with the emulsifier and thickener. Some emulsifiers and polymers lose viscosity in acidic conditions. Add the complex, measure the pH, raise it slowly with a mild base and check viscosity at each step.
DMAE grades compared
DMAE is sold as a free liquid base, as a bitartrate salt and in complexes. The salt and complex forms are easier to handle and smell less. Compare the DMAE content on the CoA when switching between grades.
Record the lot number in your batch log so every production run can be traced back to its certificate of analysis. Retain a small sample of each lot for at least the shelf life of the finished product, since it makes later quality questions much easier to answer.
Storage
Store closed in a dry place away from light. Close the container after use.
